City of Alexandria, Virginia Commission on Information Technology ______MINUTES November 17, 2014 Meeting

1. Call to Order/Roll Call

2. Broadband Plan for the City/Progress Report

Commissioner Rice updated the Commission on Commission efforts in support of CIO, Kevin Edwards’ efforts to deploy City-owned INET fiber.

a. Adopted: Recommendation that the City use the Engage Alexandria webpage to surface and centralize the broadband discussion, including gathering citizen input. Motion by Commissioner Rice. Second by Commissioner Scott. Vote was unanimous. b. Adopted: Recommendation to urge the City to create a broadband strategic plan for the update of the City’s INET and other broadband needs in the City, based on the 2012 CTC study. Motion by Commissioner Rice. Second by Commissioner Acosta. Vote was unanimous.

3. Civic Engagement Task Force/Progress Report

Commissioner Acosta endorsed broader use of Engage Alexandria, as a means of enhancing civic engagement. Additionally, Commissioner Baliga raised civic hacking as a means of engaging the community. a. Adopted: Recommendation that the City ITS department occasionally host civic hacking meet-ups. Motion by Commissioner Baliga. Second by Commissioner Franklin. Vote was unanimous.

4. Vendor Representation at Commission Meetings

Topic tabled for January 12, 2015 meeting.

5. New Business: Commissioner Rice recommended that the City consider joining the Next Century City Coalition.

a. Adopted: Recommendation that the City explore membership in the Next Century Cities Coalition. Motion by Commissioner Rice. Second by Commissioner Acosta. Vote was unanimous.

b. Commissioner Rudd asked that the Commission reserve time on the agenda in January, 2015 for presentation of the results of the Alexandria City Library’s needs assessment.
