Artist’s Dancing Charades

Objective: Get people up and moving; highlights communication strategies

Materials: o Index cards with assignment and dance move o Flip chart with instructions o Flip chart paper for participants o Markers and pens

Procedure: 1. Split room into groups of 6-7 people 2. Each person can only go up once 3. Each group will need: o Blank flip chart o Markers o No chairs o A team member to time 60 seconds per round.

Directions: o One at time each member of the group goes into the box placed in the middle of the room and draws out an index card. o Back in their team, they must act and/or draw their assignment, without speaking or drawing symbols, until a member of the group guesses the word on the card, or time runs out. o If the group guesses correctly, they all must raise their hands for a facilitator to come over. o Then, they all must do the dance written on the opposite side of the card. o The facilitator will then give points based upon how enthusiastic their dancing was. Then, repeat the above process so that each team member gets to play the artist. o The goal of the game is to have every team member get to play the artist, and to acquire as many points as possible.

Debrief: 1. What did you notice about the other members of your group throughout the activity? 2. How did you feel when no one could guess your word? 3. How did you feel when you couldn’t guess the word? 4. How can you relate to this feeling within your program?

Closing: This game addresses how we can deal with frustration and use it to improve group communication— even when we’re having fun. Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed the dancing!
