STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE SUPPLEMENTARY PROCEDURES FRIDGE TEMPERATURE MONITORING DISPENSARY

PURPOSE: SCOPE:

Preparations  The Dispensary Clinical governance lead1 is accountable for the completion of Fridge temperature monitoring.  The dispensary Clinical governance lead may delegate the responsibility of completing the Fridge temperature monitoring to a trained member of staff.  All staff responsible for this task , should be trained in using the thermometer (mercury and digital thermometers)  If possible, the Dispensary must make sure that emergency power supply is available, in the event of a power cut. Emergency power supply should supply power for a minimum of 24 hours.  A Dispensary fridge used for storing medicines, but is used exclusively for the storage of medicines, i.e. no food products should be stored in the fridge to minimize the risk of changes in temperature and risk of contamination.

PROCEDURE RESPONSIBILITY

1. Check the fridge temperature (min & Max) daily, and record in the refrigerator Temperature record sheet (Appendix 1).

2. Press the reset button after recording the temperature each day, in order to obtain new baseline.

PROCEDURE RESPONSIBILITY

4. Check fridge working correctly, and defrost regularly. Record the date the fridge was defrosted (see bottom half of Fridge temperature record sheet) Reading below +2˚C and above +8˚C 5. Inform The Dispenser and/or the clinical governance lead 6. Take action-  Review the training and competence of the member of staff reading the temperatures,  Ensure the fridge is working correctly.  If using a digital thermometer make sure the probe is in a suitable position. Review of temperature Record sheets 7. Review recording on a monthly basis  Check the fridge temperature is checked every day  Has the necessary action been taken, if reading are outside the normal range  When a remedial action has been taken-has that been recorded.  Sign and date the review
