It is the official policy of the Department of General Services (DGS) to prohibit any employee or member of the public from possessing a firearm or dangerous weapon in a building or other structure, or on a work site or workspace serving as a workstation for employees of the DGS. (Such conduct may also constitute a violation of Penal Code Section 171b.)

The policy applies in all DGS-owned buildings or leased spaces, garages, and parking facilities, including space within buildings shared with other departments or agencies. It also applies to any work site or workspace occupied by DGS employees, whether or not the space is owned or leased by the DGS. Exempted are employees whose official duties require them to handle weapons.

Prohibited weapons include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Any firearm, loaded or unloaded. This shall apply even if the person has a permit for a concealed weapon pursuant to Penal Code Section 12050. Law enforcement officers are exempt from this policy. 2. Dangerous weapons including switchblade knives, clubs, metal knuckles, etc. (A complete list is contained in Penal Code Section 12020.) 3. BB or pellet guns, CO2 or spring action, spot marker or paint guns. 4. All knives with a fixed or fixable blade exceeding 4 inches. 5. Laser guns, stun guns, or unauthorized tear gas weapons. Tear gas weapons, including pepper spray, mace and similar spray devices, may be possessed for self-defense pursuant to Penal Code Section 12403.7.

In the event there is credible information that a person is in violation of this policy, notify your supervisor or security personnel as appropriate. The supervisor and/or security personnel should contact the California Highway Patrol (CHP) or local law enforcement agency as appropriate. Employees should refrain from attempting to retrieve or confiscate weapons.
