Preceptor Dr. David Trent is a family medicine physician who is not afraid of Information what comes his way. When asked about a typical day in his office, the staff stated, “no day is the same”. Dr. Trent shares his clinic with his wife, Dr. Judy Trent, and friend Dr. Robert Williams. Description of Spiro is the home of Oklahoma' only prehistoric, Native American Location archaeological site open to the public, one of the most important prehistoric sites in the nation. Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, is located 6 1/2 miles northeast of town. Other parks nearby include the Heavener- Runestone State Recreation Area, Lake Wister State Park, Talimena State Park and various recreation areas. Oklahoma's largest lake, Lake Eufaula, is only a few miles to the west and boasts two state parks with resort lodges and numerous Corps of Engineers recreation areas. A Civic Center with auditorium, tennis court and swimming pool and a city park with private swim beach and public picnic area are provided by the city. Three public golf courses are located within 20 miles of Spiro. Over 250 miles of backpacking and hiking trails and 75 miles of horse trails are available on public lands in state parks and on national forest lands within a 100-mile radius of Spiro. The area around Spiro harbors most of Oklahoma's large deer herd; is filled with migratory birds due to the large number of wildlife refuges; offers excellent quail, dove, turkey and squirrel hunting; and some of the best fishing you will ever find on the area's many lakes and streams. For more information, visit http://www.myspiro.com Orientation After attending Group Orientation at the Phoenix Building in Tulsa, students will then travel to Poteau where they will meet with the Area Health Education Center’s Clinical Coordinator, Jennifer Billingsley. Jennifer will take students on a tour of the hospital. During the hospital tour, students will visit the hospital’s human resources department to obtain badges, and turn in required documents (HIPAA Training Certificate, Immunization Records, Proof of Personal Health Insurance, Background Check, and Letter of Good Standing from the Clinical Education Office). The tour will also take students by the Administration office to obtain keys to the house. Students are required to meet the doctor at the Housing\Meals A home is provided for students and is located on the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center grounds in Poteau, a 20 minute drive from Spiro. The 4 bedroom, 2 bath home is shared with other medical students. Students will have lunch with the doctor each day. Telemedicine Computer, printer and copier are provided for student use at the and/or clinic office. Videoconferencing equipment is located at the hospital. Distance Additionally, all videoconferences are attended by Jennifer Billingsley, Learning AHEC Clinical Coordinator, who can provide assistance if needed. Description of The Spiro Family Medical Center is a satellite clinic of Sparks rotation Regional Medical Center of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and is the only clinic in town. A student can expect to see everything from colds and coughs to warts and stitches. Student will make rounds at 3 nursing homes once per month. There are 2 additional doctors in the Spiro Family Medical Center, and the student experience is shared among the 3 physicians. The clinic staff embraces the student experience as well, and works to shift students around the clinic so that they may gain experience from each new situation.
