Reports to: Senior Manager of Creative Services
Purpose of job To design and art direct all of RNIB group’s web and digital communication across in-house and external agency work, in order to provide a high quality in-house design service across online media.
Impact: No direct reports initially, but may be managing interns and volunteers and will be working closely with the Senior Print Designer, print designers, Audio Visual Producer and the Digital team to develop and deliver overall design direction.
Financial responsibility: Team budget for photography (joint with Senior Print Designer), software and equipment. Total approx 10K. Decision making responsibility: Need to apply independent judgement and influence and inspire peers, junior and senior employees alike. Refers to line manager for strategic decisions.
Main accountabilities:
1. To own, execute and art direct all of RNIB group’s web and digital design across in-house and external agency work.
2. To inspire and drive quality across all digital design using a high level of expertise to deliver and encourage striking accessible concepts and design, which meet or exceed briefs and expectations.
3. Champion, explore and push the RNIB’s and Action’s brands towards a more customer focused, warm and modern approach.
4. Develop a good understanding of the orgainsational strategy and how that strategy is supported from a design perspective.
5. Maintain a ‘wholistic overview approach’ to design and art direction.
6. Lead regular creative brainstorms, inspiration days and quarterly creative reviews together with the Senior Creative Services Manager and Print Design Lead.
7. Challenge, inspire and develop good relationships with internal clients and the rest of the creative services team.
8. Proactively work with other teams to identify communication needs, in particularly with the digital and solutions team.
9. Work with authority and professionalism, delegate work as appropriate and offer feedback to team members and internal stakeholders, ensuring high quality digital design is delivered at all times.
10. Taking an active interest in, and keeping up-to-date with developments in digital design and industry trends to ensure the creative services team can deliver work that is up- to-date and relevant.
11. Carry out regular competitor audits and keeping informed of trends and developments within the charity sector to ensure the organisation maintains perspective and that RNIB’s and Action’s work has ‘stand-for’ and ‘stand-out’.
12. Manage digital design volunteers and interns and print designers where relevant, including recruitment, personal development and performance management.
13. Own and develop the photo library together with the Print Design lead and wider design team.
14. Maintain archives of all design work created in-house and externally.

Person Specification
All criteria are essential unless otherwise stated
1. Specialist knowledge, skills and experience
1.1 Recognised qualification in graphic and digital design and relevant experience of working as a digital designer.
1.2 Ability to produce innovative and accessible designs and to interpret design briefs, whilst working to brand guidelines.
1.3 Good working knowledge or basic understanding of the Following software packages and languages: Ps, Ai, Id, CSS, Flash, MySQL. An understanding of HTML Coding and PHP would also be an advantage.
1.4 A good understanding of accessibility across all digital formats.
1.5 Appreciation, and good understaning of photography and illustration. 2. People management skills
2.1 Experience of recruiting and performance managing staff, implementing and monitoring corporate people policies.
2.2 Experience of managing and inspiring designers, photographers and illustrators.
3. Planning and organisational skills
3.1 Ability to work to tight deadlines and on multiple projects whilst prioritising work effectively.
3.2 Ability to plan work of the team up to a year in advance and to anticipate work.
3.3 Ability to keep accurate records and maintain effective filing systems.
