CLASS POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS Physical Science Honors 2006-7 Mr. Crowell *Grade Level: 9 * Satisfies 10 units of the OUHSD science graduation requirement (Two Semesters). *Prerequisites for Enrollment: Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2-Honors or Geometry-Honors or Interactive Mathematics 2-Honors or Imteractive Mathematics 3--Honors. The student must score at the proficient or advanced level on the Mathematics content standards test given as part of the STAR testing. *Class Outline can been seen online at http://achsphysics.tripod.com I. CLASS OBJECTIVES The primary objective of this class is to provide students with introductory knowledge of physics and chemistry. The secondary objective of this class is to prepare students for the advanced placement classes in chemistry and physics. II. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE 1. Allow yourself and others to learn. 2. Allow your teacher to teach. 3. Please be kind and respectful; do not hurt anyone in any way. 4. Communicate responsibly and never argue. III. ATTENDANCE: 1.) Please note that it is your responsibility to find out what you missed when you are absent! Please try to copy down any missed assignments or notes from you neighbors and then check with me to make sure that you have all of your materials. 2.) You will have twice the number of days to make up your work as the number of days you were absent. Work turned in later than this will receive ½ credit. Work that is more than one month delinquent from this deadline can no longer be made up. 3.) Absences on test days must be excused or points will be taken off of the make up exam! 4.) You are considered tardy if you are not in your seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. This means that you should have your materials out and be started on your warm-up exercise if one is on the board. 5.) Unexcused absences or absences that have not been cleared through the office will cause a loss in credit for class participation. 6.) Eight or more unexcused absences can be cause for failure in the class. IV. MATERIALS: You need to have a have a Scientific Calculator for this class. Always bring your textbook and class notebook to class. You will keep your science work in a three ring binder. V. CLASS PROCEDURES: Check the daily agenda for schedule changes (See attached schedule). VI. PROBLEM ASSIGNMENTS: Head every assignment with your full name, the date due, class and period, and an assignment title. VII. RESTROOM POLICY: Any student who needs to go to the restroom must fill out a restroom pass. Please return the pass to me when you are through with it. Each student gets three free passes per semester. After using more than three passes in a semester students will either consult a urologist or lose class participation credit.
VIII. GENERAL RULES (Common Sense): The student is requested to refrain from the following activities without specific permission from the teacher: 1. Wandering around in class. 2. Bringing out tape players, CD players, pagers, laser lights, electronic games, magazines, hats, etc. (such materials will be detained for 24 hours) 3. Doing off task activities such as reading magazines, putting on make-up, planning weekend activities, plotting the destruction of the world, etc. 4. Rocking chairs back on the back legs, putting feet on the furniture, or sleeping in class.
1 5. Making too much noise or otherwise disrupting the class (especially during class notes!). 6. Cell phones must be turned off and put away during class. If I see a phone, I will take it. Phones are especially not to be out during tests since they can be used for cheating. IX. FOOD POLICY: Unfortunately, no food or gum is allowed in the room during class time since this is a chemical lab room. On days when there are no chemicals out in the room you may have beverages if they are in a plastic container with a lid. X. GRADING: YOUR GRADE WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING SCALE: A: 90-100% (This scoring range represents a mastery of the California State Standards*covered in the class.) B: 80-89% (This represents a mastery of at most of the California State Standards material with]full participation in the class) C: 70-79% (This represents full participation in the class with a tertiary understanding of the California State Standards material) D: 60-69% (This scoring range represents a poor mastery of the California State Standards material but general participation with class activities) F: Below 60% (This scoring range represents a poor mastery of the California State Standard material and a lack of participation with class activities) * California state standards can be found at www. cde .ca.gov/ *The distribution of points in this class will be approximately: 25% Labs, In-class assignments, and class participation 20% Homework 45% Tests and Quizzes, 10% Final Exam XI. HOMEWORK LOAD: The time spent on homework can vary from one hour per night to one hour per week depending on the student's previous knowledge and how well classroom time is utilized by the student. XII. HOW TO GET HELP: See me most mornings, lunches, and after school. An official schedule will be posted once club schedules are finalized. XIII. THE KEY TO SUCCESS: Treat science problems as a game, like chess. Keep in contact with Mr. Crowell and remember that the class is set up to reward consistent effort. XIV.
