The Distinguished Women of North Carolina Awards are sponsored by the North Carolina Council for Women to recognize North Carolinians who have attained outstanding levels of achievement and whose contributions have made a significant impact upon the lives of our citizens. All nominations must be postmarked by January 15. No late nominations will be accepted. DESCRIPTION OF CATEGORIES FOR NOMINATION

The Arts Award recognizes significant contributions to the visual, literacy, cultural or performing arts, media, communications or to an organization which promotes artists, art programs or historic preservation.

The Business/Professions Award recognizes excellence in a professional field. The nominee may have excelled in her profession through research, innovation or individual performance. The nominee may be retired, self-employed, working in the private or public sector.

The Education Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of education through teaching, administration, research and/or participation in professional education associations.

The Government Award recognizes the accomplishments of the nominee which have enhanced the quality of life for both the citizens and the community. The nominee may have worked in international, federal, state or local government as an employee or an elected/appointed official.

The Journalism Award recognizes the female, print journalist whose contributions and acheivements in covering women’s issues and events are considered outstanding. Nominees may write for either a newspaper or magazine in either a staff or freelance capacity.

The Volunteerism Award recognizes significant contributions made to the community through devotion of time and energy, with the goal to improve and enhance the lives of citizens as a volunteer.

The Jean Nelson Award recognizes outstanding contributions for the betterment of women in North Carolina and the best overall work in promoting and carrying out the purpose and mission of the North Carolina Council for Women.

OFFICIAL RULES

Eligibility: The nominee must be a native of North Carolina or current resident. Former nominees are eligible. Former winners are prohibited. Nominations are encouraged from any individual or organization.

Selection Process: All nominees are judged on the following criteria: demonstrated excellence in her performance; made significant contributions in her award category; made major contributions that will have continuing impact in the community at large; shown leadership through motivating others; and opened opportunities for women.

There are seven categories of nominations. Each nominator is limited to one nomination per category. It is possible that the nominee may qualify for more than one category. The nominator should select the one most appropriate. The Selection Committee reserves the right to make its own judgement as to the category to be recognized. The Selection Committee chooses one winner for each category.

Periodically, a Public Service Award is presented to a nominee who has made significant and outstanding contributions in a majority of the categories. Nominations are not accepted for this award. The Selection Committee reserves the right to select the recipient. All decisions are final. Supporting information should include club and professional affiliations, offices held, community activities, professional and academic achievements, special awards, honors, hobbies and special interests.
