Kristina shared how to use the document as a tool. Concerns with the document were shared with Kristina. Kristina has been invited back to another meeting mid-year to address concerns with guidelines after they have been in place for a while. The biggest concern with guidelines is that the guidelines will become COMAR regulations. Kristina offered to visit school districts. Her contact information is [email protected]  TPE Update NASSP Coordinator Report: Nick Novak Shared his fast five:  NASSP Weekly Advocacy Update-follow @nnovak11  Congressional Recess—Not much happening  October is National Principal’s Month—go to web site for celebration ideas  Region 2 Diversity Director Nomination needed by December5th  New Features on NASSP Legislative Action Website https://www.votervoice.net/NASSP/Home NASSP Board of Director’s Report: Dr. Christine Handy-Collins Many middle schools do not have National Junior Honor Societies. Encourage Middle schools to start chapters. The National Honor Societies are a source of funding for NASSP. National Conference is in San Diego. All are encouraged to attend. Executive Director’s report: Scott Pfeiffer Executive Director’s Report September 27, 2014 1) We are really doing remarkably in terms of recruiting new members. A new marketing strategy in Howard County has produced 14 new members. In Baltimore City, a visit with the Superintendent produced 15 new members. Prince Georges is signing up 10 aspiring leaders, 4 additions is Washington, 4 in Montgomery, and 5 new in Calvert. Still struggling in Frederick, Cecil, and St. Mary’s—not sure what the secret is there. I am using AXA scholarship discounts to market the huge untapped market in Baltimore County and Montgomery, but little luck so far. But overall, we may get over 700 this year with another 5 – 10% increase!!

2) We sold out the October 1 conference at 80. Please push the AP conference on October 16. Ten registered so far so we need to push! Debbie O’Byrne is chair.

3) See the description of our conference line-up provided for you. Latest addition is the Performance Assessment workshop. I am also in the initial negotiations with another sponsor, Edmentum, to possibly do a workshop on preparing students for PARCC. This would be held around February 1 if we decide to run with it.

4) AXA has committed to some significant funding again this year, so we hope to run a happy hour reception at a local restaurant in SanDiego the Saturday Night of the convention. Some food and two drink tickets a person would run us about $2000, which we would pay for with funds from AXA

5) Dyan Harrison from Gaithersburg High is our AP of the Year. We had 10 nominations—a record. Susan Evans is a finalist for National Principal of the Year

6) Region II will get a third board member starting next year, in the Diversity category. Nick Novak will share conversations on this topic in the region.

7) The newsletter you just got is the last hard copy. Future ones will be electronic if I can figure it all out. I am planning to use a portion (around $1500) of funds we budgeted for newsletters to mail three post cards to members that will highlight future workshops, our spring conference, and other initiatives.

8) NASSP needs a representative to the Professional Standards Board (PSTEB) due to the retirement of Theresa Stafford. More information to come

9) Keep President Jim Moore in your thoughts. He is on extended sick leave dealing with some issues they think might be residual effects from a stroke he had several years ago.

10) Read my latest report on the state board meeting and the TPE survey. Though the report as delivered was Highly Complimentary of state efforts (and with good reason, I think) I do think it masks continued concern our own members have regarding the demands it places on administrators. Thoughts?

2 11) Many thanks for funding some clerical support. It is super and membership increases, I think are a direct result of time I NOW have to market rather than word process!

MPSSAA Report: Jay Berno  All sports were more profitable than the finance committee projected  Heads Up football initiative presented at April Meeting many school systems have not signed agreements  Atholton High School requested a waiver for a 19 year old runner with autism. MPSSA determined a waiver is not needed if the runner is not an official scoring runner  Sudden Cardiac Arrest bill passed into law last spring. School Systems are required to educate parents and athletes of signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest  New website to be on line early October  Ref pay is changing its name to Arbiter Pay  Starting with fall sports teams will be seeded according to regular season record. Region directors must check for accuracy. Once bracket is released any corrections must be made before 10 am the following morning. Otherwise bracket stays intact  Basketball endorsed the proposal from Baden but would offer Spaulding the first right of refusal  Change in venue for state soccer championships. Press box at UMBC is condemned. Loyola is the preferred site  There is an issue with the hockey field at Washington College. This may not be resolved until after championships are over. If that is the case the state finals will need to be moved  Football finals will be at M&T Bank Stadium Thursday, Friday, and Saturday regardless of the Ravens schedule  P-20 Council: Tom Evans The Teacher Education Task Force has the following recommendations: 1. To ensure the highest quality teacher candidates Maryland should transition from an undergraduate teacher certification program to a five-year, post-baccalaureate/MAT/MED program over a three to five year period beginning with the freshman class of 2015-2016 2. To ensure better transitions I the first three years of teaching, Maryland should institute a three- year residency program that would scale up teaching responsibilities during the pre-tenure years. 3. To recruit and retain the highest quality teachers, the State should continue to professionalize teaching as a career and embed continuous improvement and accountability into both educator preparation programs and educator career advancement.
