BACKGROUND The quest for realism has been in the center of graphics systems since the advent of computer graphics techniques in the mid sixties. Although commercial packages have sophisticated rendering capabilities, object representation and modeling have remained a challenge. Rhino3D (http://www.rhino3d.com), Google SketchUp (http://sketchup.google.com), trueSpace (http://www.caligari.com), Blender (http://www.blender.org) and other more sophisticated systems filled this gap by introducing modeling software packages that allow the creation of just about any object or scene using simple techniques that operate either in 2-D or directly in 3-D. A precise representational scheme is applied which can then be converted to tessellated models for various forms of rendering.
OBJECTIVES In this project you will design a virtual model of any object, a building, a household item, etc, and render the model with various lights, materials and shadows using your chosen modeling and rendering package. An example is given below. The level of sophistication should be limited by your time and your ability to master the tools within the 3-D modeler.

COMPANY SETUP Your team will form a computer graphics company, a small 3-4 member start-up company. This will be a symbolic company only, no real company formation is necessary. The company formation requires the following:
o Name: Give your company a name, e.g. Creative Bulls LLC. o Management: decide on a top-down (CEO based) or egoless (democratic) approach. I would recommend a democratic approach. o Product model: choose a model to build as the product of the company. o Art: the company needs a visual, artistic representation. A logo represents the company’s vision which should be conveyed visually to potential customers. This art piece can be a hand-drawn sketch or done by a professional system such as Adobe Illustrator.
Please note the following important deadlines:
o September 5: company name, structure and product are due o October 3: company art/logo is due o November 28: company test documentation is due
PROJECT DESCRIPTION During this project you will perform the following simple tasks: Familiarize yourself with the 3-D modeling environment: - view-ports and coordinate systems; - object modeling (planar surfaces, cylinders, splines, etc); - object snapping and editing; and - various forms of rendering with material types, shadows, etc. Model the chosen object with some level of detail. Model a few inside components. Render the model with various options. Once this design project is done, write-up your experience with the project as described in the next section.

DELIVERABLES There are three deliverables: A project description document with snapshots of the design process. A short live demonstration of your design. A video of the full team presentation. Using this file as a template, write your project description that contains, as a minimum, the following components: A short abstract of no more than 200 words. A list of keywords of no more than 5. An introduction section where you describe the challenges of model creation for virtual environments. A section on the modeling process where you describe step-by-step how the model was created. Proper illustrations throughout the text. A section on the final model and its components.
FORMAT Use this MS Word file as the template and enter your text directly after the team members’ contributions. Please name the file as in the following example:
Team_Amanda_TP.doc
When submitting the file, the subject line should contain the course prefix as well as the file name above. Example:
EEL_5771_Team_Amanda_TP.doc
The video should be submitted via a link where it is hosted.
SUBMISSION Your project should be submitted electronically via e-mail attachment. Please send the file and the video link to [email protected] no later than November 28, 2017, 5:00 PM.
