Excelsior College – Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a Homeland Security concentration
Excelsior College is offering a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a Homeland Security concentration. The program will introduce students to the threats posed by domestic and international terrorism, as well as strategies for countering those threats. Students will have an opportunity to examine effective practices for security planning and threat assessment and explore key principles of emergency management and disaster planning which can and should be employed in the face of man-made and natural threats to the homeland.
The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a Homeland Security concentration requires a total of 120 semester hours, at least 60 of which must be earned in the arts and sciences and with - 21 of those 60 earned at the upper level.
The major itself requires 33 semester hours, 18 of which must be upper level. The specific requirements are:
Core Requirements: 15 hours CJ 101 Introduction of Criminal Justice, or similar homeland security course. (CJ 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice, CJ125 Introduction to Homeland Security) An introductory-level survey course in Criminal Justice Administration. (CJ256 Criminal Justice Administration) A theoretical course on theories or crime, causation, or victimology. (e.g. CJ 324 Criminology, CJ 326 Victimology, or similar course) A course in research methods in the social sciences. (CJ410 Research Methods in Criminal Justice) Capstone course. (CJ498 Criminal Justice Capstone)
Intermediate/Upper Division Courses: 15 hours Any four of the following courses (or similar courses) CJ 350 International Terrorism CJ 352 Domestic Terrorism CJ 460 Infrastructure Security and Policy CJ 450 Counterterrorism CJ 356 Emergency Management
Electives: 3 hours Any Homeland Security-related course not taken as part of the intermediate requirements Any Criminal Justice course not taken as a part of the core requirements (CJ315 Gangs in America, CJ325 Comparative Criminal Justice, CJ386 Cybercrimes, POL311 Public Policy Issues, POL 435 Organizational Behavior, POL 486 Human Resource Management)
