The American Dream is a “combination of the spiritual longing, the material enterprise, and the quest for freedom and equality that led to the founding of this nation” (556). The early settlers of the colonies saw America as the land of opportunity, a land in which resources were abundant and life was good. It seemed like it could be a Utopia.

States in Literature. New York: Scott, Foresman, and Company, 1985.

556. Print.

The American Dream has taken many turns in the course of history, from the social reforms of the early 20th century to the new perceptions of the 21st century. Many question whether the “Dream” still exists. Look at the following statement and decide how you are going to argue the topic:

“The American Dream is available to all; it is a model for an ideal society.”

Your claim should be original and should express your view on a concept that many argue may or may not still exist in present day.

Choose sources that best support your view and give your paper the knowledge base it needs.

As you write about each of your points, you must examine the counters each time, showing why others would disagree with you and refuting their challenges.

This is the paper that SHOULD bring together everything you have learned this semester; therefore, it should be your very best effort.
