DEPARTMENT VICE CHAIRS

The Department Vice Chair assists the Department Chair in implementing the teaching, research, practice, and service mission of the School of Nursing (SON). The Vice Chair is responsible for assisting the Chair in providing leadership to the undergraduate and graduate course and clinical coordinators to ensure a quality education for all students. He/she is responsible for mentoring new, junior, and senior faculty, including as appropriate: the implementation of departmental orientation procedures, professional development activities for faculty to improve and enhance teaching, and organized systems for peer-evaluations. The Vice Chair, in collaboration with the Search and Screen Committee, assists the Chair in faculty recruitment and hiring of faculty. The Vice Chair also provides leadership in completing faculty assignments in partnership with staff from the Office of Academic Affairs as well as course, clinical, and track coordinators.

Functions and Expectations--Assists the Department Chair in the following:

1. Provides Leadership a. Facilitates the implementation of the curriculum in collaboration with course, clinical, and track coordinators; assists in mentoring coordinators in an effective implementation of the curriculum. b. Facilitates faculty teaching assignments in concert with the Department Chair and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs c. Facilitates appropriate assignment and measurement of faculty workload related to all aspects of the SON mission d. Participates in appropriate committees and/or task forces related to program aims and/or faculty development.

2. Communicates Effectively a. Collaborates with Department Chair, department staff, and others to convey information that may influence faculty recruitment and hiring, faculty teaching and scholarship, student learning, and effective department administration/management. b. Interprets and ensures academic and administrative program policy for students and faculty to ensure program implementation and adherence. c. Assists Chair in managing conflict between students and faculty and/or among faculty, as appropriate.

3. Mentors Faculty a. Fosters faculty development related to the goals and the missions of the school b. Encourages and acknowledges faculty accomplishment c. Organizes and conducts faculty orientation programs as appropriate d. Organizes or conducts peer review of faculty teaching as appropriate

4. Fosters Good Teaching a. Models excellent teaching b. Mentors faculty in the teaching role through organized peer-reviews, coaching sessions, professional development programs in teaching pedagogy, and/or teaching awards

5. Promotes Faculty Scholarship a. Models excellent scholarship b. Promotes faculty productivity in scholarship

6. Promotes Practice: Collaborates with Department Chair, faculty, the and Vice Dean for Practice and Engagement, and the School Practice and Engagement Committee to develop and/or support faculty practice opportunities in the community and within the UTHSCSA system. Section 2.4.10, Page 2 7. Promotes Service a. Fosters an environment of service within faculty. b. Supports faculty in the roles and expectations for participation in faculty governance, as well as professional and community service--encouraging balance among teaching, scholarship, practice, and service.

8. Represents the School: Represents the Department Chair and/or the School of Nursing as appropriate within the school, within UTHSCSA and with external agencies and constituent groups as needed and in his/her absence.

Qualifications

 Doctoral degree  Associate Professor or Professor in Tenure or Clinical Track  Demonstrated experience and expertise in the faculty role: excellent teaching, productive scholarship, practice, and service

 Leadership, management, or administrative experience preferred

Appointment

Administrative and teaching responsibilities are assigned by the Department Chair
