The'book is a slim one, but Coase's resume has always shown quality rather than sheer output. The book is certain to attract attentioI.I: when the founding guru of law and economics responds .to his critics, people will listen. And it is worth listening, for we can gain insight into the Coas~ Theo rem by seeing the tacks Coase takes in defending himself. -

The Market Structure of Higher Learning Abstract A student embarking on a college search is astounded at the number of higher learning institutions available -- an initial response may be to consider their market structure as one of perfect competition. Upon fkrther consideration, though, one sees this is inaccurate. In fact, the market structure of higher learning incorporates elements of monopolistic competition, oligopoly, and monopoly. An institution may not explicitly be a profit maximizer. However, treating it as such allows predictions of actions to be made by applying the above three market structures. -

Coase Theorem” Asserts That in the Absence of Transaction Costs, Parties to an Externality Will Bargain to an Efficient Outcome
Abstract The \Coase theorem" asserts that in the absence of transaction costs, parties to an externality will bargain to an efficient outcome. It also claims that the resulting level of externality-generating is inde- pendent of initial assignment of rights. It is well-known that Coase's second claim is true if utility is quasi-linear so that the valuation of externalities does not depend on wealth. This paper finds a class of preferences for which Coase's second claim is true when there are wealth effects. It presents a necessary and sufficient condition for Coase's second claim and discusses applications of this result. 1 When Was Coase Right? Coase maintained that, regardless of the way that the law assigns liability, if the perpetrator and recipient are able to bargain freely, they are likely to reach an efficient outcome. Coase's paper consists of a series of examples and insightful discussions. He made no claims of a formal theorem based on explicit assumptions. The term \Coase Theorem" seems to originate with George Stigler, who explained Coase's ideas in his textbook The Theory of Price [13], pp 110-114. -

Bernanke, September 24, 20071 One of the most important investment decisions you will ever make is the decision to invest in yourself. You might think that investment is only about buying stocks and bonds, but let’s take a step back and consider investment a little differently. Economists use the word investment to refer to spending on capital, which can be either physical capital (tools and equipment) or human capital (education and training). Let’s briefly look at each type. Investing in Physical Capital A firm invests in itself by buying capital that it uses to improve what it does. In other words, it invests in physical capital to earn higher profits in the future. For example, a firm might invest in new technology to increase the productivity of its employees. The increased productivity raises future revenue (income earned by the firm) and profits (revenue minus costs of production). Seems like an easy decision, right? Well, before a firm invests in physical capital, it must consider three very important points. First, a firm invests in technology now with the expectation that it will lead to higher revenue and expected profits in the future. -

Feinstein Stanford University Historical evidence indicates that hyperinflations can disrupt indi- viduals' normal trading patterns and impede the orderly functioning of markets. To explore these issues, we construct a theoretical model of hyperinflation that focuses on individuals and their process of economic exchange. In our model buyers must carry cash while shopping, and some transactions take place in a decentralized setting in which buyer and seller negotiate over the terms of trade of an indivisible good. Since buyers face the constant threat of incoming younger (hence richer) customers, their bargaining position is weak- ened by inflation, allowing sellers to extract a higher real price. How- ever, we show that higher inflation also reduces buyers' search, increasing sellers' wait for customers. As a result, the volume of transactions concluded in the decentralized sector falls. At high enough rates of inflation, all agents suffer a welfare loss. I. Introduction Since. The concept of capital maintenance is concerned with how an enterprise defines the capital that it seeks to maintain in profit determination. The concept of fair value accounting is concerned with the valuation of assets, liabilities, and equity based on market values or its closest substitutes. As only inflows in excess of the amounts needed to preserve the capital may be regarded as profit, the choice of the capital maintenance measurement basis influences the residual amount, i.e. the profit, and consequently, the decision-making process. Currently, there are two basic capital maintenance concepts: financial capital maintenance concept and physical capital maintenance concept, each with many variants. Different valuation concepts are not commensurate with any of the theoretical variants of capital maintenance. Introduction Modern accounting recognizes several valuation methods and basis of measurement, other than historical cost, that are more closely related to the acceptable economic value at the time of valuation. Currently, there are some nine different valuation methods across the IASs and IFRSs derived from the four basic measurement basis employed in the IASs and IFRSs: historical cost, current cost, realisable (settlement) value, and present value. -

This chapter covers the types of market such as perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition, in which business firms operate. Basically, when we hear the word market, we think of a place where goods are being bought and sold. In economics, market is a place where buyers and sellers are exchanging goods and services with the following considerations such as: • Types of goods and services being traded • The number and size of buyers and sellers in the market • The degree to which information can flow freely Perfect or Pure Market Imperfect Market Perfect Market is a market situation which consists of a very large number of buyers and sellers offering a homogeneous product. Under such condition, no firm can affect the market price. Price is determined through the market demand and supply of the particular product, since no single buyer or seller has any control over the price. Perfect Competition is built on two critical assumptions: . The behavior of an individual firm . The nature of the industry in which it operates The firm is assumed to be a price taker The industry is characterized by freedom of entry and exit Industry • Normal demand and supply curves • More supply at higher price Firm • Price takers • Have to accept the industry price Perfect Competition cannot be found in the real world. For such to exist, the following conditions must be observed and required: A large number of sellers Selling a homogenous product No artificial restrictions placed upon price or quantity Easy entry and exit All buyers and sellers have perfect knowledge of market conditions and of any changes that occur in the market Firms are “price takers” There are very many small firms All producers of a good sell the same product There are no barriers to enter the market All consumers and producers have ‘perfect information’ Firms sell all they produce, but they cannot set a price. -

Wright FRB Chicago and NBER October 2014 Abstract We use data from the Survey of Consumer Finance and Survey of Income Program Participation to show that young households with children are under-insured against the risk that an adult member of the household dies. We develop a tractable macroeconomic model with human capital risk, age-dependent returns to human capital investment, and endogenous borrowing constraints due to the limited pledgeability of human capital (limited contract enforcement). We show analytically that, consistent with the life insurance data, in equilibrium young households are borrowing constrained and under-insured against human capital risk. A calibrated version of the model can quantitatively account for the life-cycle variation of life-insurance holdings, financial wealth, earnings, and consumption inequality observed in the US data. Our analysis implies that a reform that makes consumer bankruptcy more costly, like the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, leads to a substantial increase in the volume of both credit and insurance. It has been argued that including the costs of appropriation and violent enforcement in transaction costs is based on the assumption that Coaseian bargaining can be extended to any institutional scenario, i.e., voluntary as well as coercive exchange. However, voluntary transactions cannot capture the logic of coercive power. This means that the assumption of an efficient political market is not valid, and that the “Political Coase Theorem” lacks the logical consistency to provide a cornerstone for political theory. -
