Exploring Different Perspectives

This summer you will be reading two different stories about two different incredible people. You'll meet a 5th grader whose extraordinarily unique physical appearance changes his daily experience at his new school. You'll also meet a 14-year-old cartoonist whose decision to switch schools brings much unexpected drama his way. Expect to laugh, cringe, smile, and maybe even shed a tear!

As you read La lección de August and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian please complete the following. Choose whichever options seem most interesting and inspiring to you! Summer Learning will be turned in on the first day of school.

Choice 1: You are the Character

Become a character in the book and produce a dairy/journal entry that focuses on significant events in your life.

 The journal with must have 8 entries of at least 12 sentences each.  The entries must focus on actual events that take place in your life as this character.  The entries must include vivid details about what you, the character, think and feel about what is happening to you.  Your journal must include at least 2 drawings that show your thinking (look at Part-Time Indian for inspiration!)  The final product may be handwritten or typed.

Choice 2: You are the Author

Pretend that you are the author of the book. You can research them online and base this activity on real facts, or you can get creative and make up your own! Write an article for a magazine (minimum 250 words).  Give some background about your inspiration for the book and tell why you wrote it.

 Talk about which character was the first one you thought of when you got the idea for this book. Where did the ideas for this character come from?

 Talk about where the rest of the characters came from. Were they inspired by real people?

 What lesson were you trying to teach your readers with this book? In other words, what is your message to the world?

 Talk about what events in your life were a part of or inspired the events in the book.

 Give your article an interesting headline; include some pictures or illustrations and include them in your article. ¡Aprendizaje de verano!

Investigando diferentes perspectivas

Este verano vas a leer dos historias distintas sobre dos personas distintas e increíbles. Vas a conocer un estudiante de quinto grado cuya apariencia física extraordinaria cambia su experiencia diaria en su nueva escuela. Además vas a conocer un caricaturista de catorce años cuya decisión de cambiar escuelas le hace pasar eventos inesperados. Anticipa reírte, sentirte vergüenza ajena, sonreírte y tal vez derramar una lágrima.

Mientras La lección de August y The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian completa una de las siguientes actividades para cada novela. ¡Escoge cualquiera opción que te parece más interesante y más inspiradora! Entrega tu aprendizaje el primer día de la escuela.

Opción 1: Tú eres el personaje principal

Hazte August o Junior y escribe entradas en un diario que relatan eventos importantes en tu vida.

 Tienes que escribir por lo menos 8 entradas de 12 oraciones cada una.  Las entradas tiene que enfocarse en los eventos actuales que occuren en tu vida como este personaje.  Las entradas deberían de incluir detalles sobre lo que tú, el personaje, piensas y te sientes sobre lo que te está pasando.  Hay que incluir dos illustraciones en el diario que muestran tu pensamiento (usa ¡Part- Time Indian para inspiración!)  Puedes escribir el diario a mano o a máquina.

Opción 2: Tú eres el autor

Hazte el autor del libro. Investiga el autor en el Internet y completa la actividad con hechos, ¡ o puedes ser creativo e inventar tus propios! Escribe un artículo de una revista (250 palabras mínumo)

 Da información sobre lo que te inspiró y explica por qué lo escribiste.

 Escribe sobre cual personaje fue el primer en que imaginaste cuando tuviste la idea de escribir el libro. ¿De dónde vienen los ideas para este personaje?  Escribe sobre de donde viene la inspiración para los otros personajes. ¿Te inspiraron personas actuales?

 ¿Qué lección querrías enseñarles a los lectores? En otras palabras, ¿Cuál es tu mensaje al mundo?

 Escribe sobre los eventos en tu vida que te inspiraron eventos en el libro.

 Pon un título interesante al artículo, incluye illustraciones o fotos.
