Illinois 4-H Excels at National Dairy Quiz Bowl

The Illinois 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team placed 3rd at the 2013 National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl competition held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 8th and 9th. Nineteen state teams participated from throughout the United States. Team members included: Anna Folgate, Dakota; Emily Irwin, Belevidere; Nathan Koester, Scales Mound; and Daniel Obert, of Orangeville, IL. In addition, Illinois had three members placing in the “top 10” written test. Emily Irwin won 2nd high individual, Nathan Koester was 7th, and Anna Folgate placed 10th overall out of 76 contestants. The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl has become a premier educational 4-H event as it challenges the contestants’ dairy knowledge in various areas including; dairy production, business management, dairy products and dairy science. Competition includes answering a 50-question test and then competing with other teams in the double elimination contest. Each round consists of a series of 5 team questions and 20 toss up questions. The following day, this Illinois foursome also participated in the NAILE dairy judging contest where they finished 10th high team overall among 22 teams in the 4-H/FFA division. The team was 5th in Brown Swiss, 6th Holsteins, and 9th high team in the Ayrshire and Jersey breed. They also placed 10th high team overall in presenting oral reasons.
