JOURNAL WRITING: Write for five minutes in response to the following question- What do you plan on doing directly after high school? Do you plan on attending college? Working?

 Personal Essay – We are going to begin working on a personal essay. We are going to focus this writing on something you can actually use. Many colleges require a college application essay, a cover letter when applying for a job is essentially a personal essay, most scholarship essays are personal essays.  Definition of a Personal Essay: o The essay focuses on one central idea supported by a variety of incidents from the writer’s knowledge AND the writer’s life. o The essay is written in a natural style. o The essay has ONE clear, focused purpose or theme. o The essay uses narrative or storytelling to relate events to the one focused purpose or theme o The essay requires that the writer communicates personal experiences and his or her reaction to them through the use of descriptions o The essay shows insightful reflection of the writer concerning the experiences and their relation to the purpose of the theme – in other words you think about what you have written and write about how it applies to you - THIS IS ESSENTIAL  The most basic question to answer is “How do you stand out from other candidates?”  Begin the brainstorming process by choosing three words that describe your best qualities or characteristics.  Brainstorm for five minutes to think of everything you can think of that you have done that proves you have these qualities.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

Ask three people who know you best – parent, friend, family member – to look at the three words you came up with. Ask them to make suggestions about other words that could be used to describe you in a positive light. Then ask them to give you examples of things you’ve done that show that those words describe you.

If you know you want to go to a specific college other than MSU, get online and look up the application question they ask for you to respond to.
