COMPRESSED-AIR PIPING FOR LABORATORY FACILITIES

PART - GENERAL

SUMMARY

Section Includes: Include labor, material, and accessories necessary to furnish and install compressed air piping, and make connections to equipment as shown on Drawings.

SUBMITTALS

Shop Drawings: Submittals for pipe and fittings are not required, except where a deviation from the Specifications is proposed. Contractor shall submit a portfolio showing equipment and components for approval by Architect/Engineer or their authorized representative before roughing-in. Each component, variation, model number, and option called out in this Specification is to be clearly indicated in submittal for each item. Shop Drawings not complying will be subject to rejection and re-submittal.

COMPRESSED AIR PIPING

General Requirements:

Piping 2 inches and smaller, Schedule 40, galvanized pipe, with Class 150 galvanized fittings.

Type L copper tube with wrought copper fittings, with 95/5 solder joints, is an acceptable alternate.

VALVES

Full Port Ball Valves:

2 Inches and Smaller:

Apollo Series 77, Full Port 600-Pound W.O.G. Threaded

2 1/2 Inches:

Apollo Series 77, Full Port 600-Pound W.O.G. Threaded

2 1/2 Inches Through 6 Inches:

QUICK CONNECTORS

Quick Connect/Disconnect Hose Couplers and Plugs:

Couplers: 1-way, automatic shut-off brass body, with O-ring or gasket seal, and stainless steel or nickel plated steel operating parts. Select socket end with threaded inlet that is considered the fixed end and has a 1-way valve.

Plug End: Straight-through type, with male or female hose connector.

PART - EXECUTION

PIPING APPLICATIONS

General Requirements:

Use steel/copper piping for the compressed air systems, including all service mains and exposed drops.

Copper tubing may be used for the Science area compressed air piping downstream of the room control valves.

PIPING INSTALLATION

Pipe Routing: Contractor shall ascertain location of electrical panelboards and shall keep piping out of area above panelboards and for a distance of 3'-6" in front of and 1'-6" from each side of panelboards, including all VAV box control panels.

Install piping next to equipment and accessories to allow servicing and maintenance.

Install air and drain piping with 1/8 inch per foot slope downward in direction of air flow.

Compressed Air Piping System: Thoroughly clean piping of grease, rust, and particles before installation. Upon completion of installation, blow system clean with high pressure air. Remove caps from drip legs before blowing clean.

Drip Legs: Provide drip leg at end of each main, branch, and low point in piping system and at each equipment drop. Drip legs to be full line sized and a minimum of 6 inches deep.

Connections:

Connect branch air piping to main from top of main.

Connect air piping to equipment and accessories with unions and shut-off valves.

Condensate: Pipe condensate from automatic drains on receiver, dryer, and filters to a floor drain.

PLACEMENT OF VALVES

General Requirements: Install valves in piping systems to isolate pipe branches, pieces of equipment, before each regulator, and where indicated on Drawings.

PLACEMENT OF QUICK COUPLERS

General Requirements:

Provide quick couplers at each air piping termination not indicated to be a Science Room outlet or direct equipment connection.

Provide a quick coupler at each air compressor location for maintenance of units.

Furnish to Owner, (1) male and (1) female hose connector plug end for each coupling installed.
