Exhibit 2.4.b shows the mean GPA and test score data for 2013-2014 applicants into initial programs, advanced programs for teachers, and programs for other school professionals. For a complete description of admission criteria, see Exhibit 2.4.a.2 Transition Points.

Part 1. Initial Programs To qualify for entry into a state-approved initial credential program, an applicant must have a GPA of 2.67 cumulative or a GPA of 2.75 for the last 60 Units. In addition, teacher candidates in California are required by the California Commission on teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to demonstrate mastery of basic skills (reading, math and writing) and competence the subject matter(s) they will be authorized to teach. Prior to admission, candidates must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) for the appropriate subject area or hold a subject area waiver (single subject candidates only). Multiple subject candidates may meet the basic skills requirement (CBEST) by passing the Multiple Subject CSET plus the writing subtest.

A California State University Executive Order allows 15% of candidates to be “exceptional admits”. These candidates are not allowed to proceed to student teaching until they have met all admission requirements.

Part 2. Advanced Programs for Teachers

Admission into the Master of Arts in Education or the Master of Science in Agricultural Education program is a two- step process. Candidates must be admitted by the graduate school and by the specific program. Candidates must hold a 3.0 cumulative GPA. In addition, in the MA in Education program, candidates must pass an initial writing assessment. Candidates who do not meet this writing requirement may be admitted to Conditionally Classified Status to remedy deficiencies through additional preparation. In 2013-2014, 22 candidates (14.7%) rated at level 2 in the writing proficiency, indicating that their writing was partially acceptable/inconsistent. These candidates were enrolled in a graduate writing course, which they need to complete successfully before advancement to “classified” status. A complete list of admission criteria for advanced programs is shown in exhibit 2.4.a.2.
