Obj: We will begin to read and analyze poetry.
Do Now: Oral Anticipation Guide. 15-20 m.
In-Class Activities:
We will receive and record a loose definition of poetry. 10-15 m. Oral Recitation of “Sleight of Hand” by Eddie Vedder 5 m. Oral Recitation of “Different Names for the Same Thing” by Ben Gibbard. 5 m. Music Video of “Different Names for the Same Thing” performed by Death Cab for Cutie, directed by Autumn de Wilde 5-15 m.
Assessment: informal assessment based on class participation.
Homework: Choose a set of song lyrics, appropriate for school, and bring them in tomorrow prepared to share them with the class.

Obj: We will read and analyze poetry.
Do Now: We will be asked to prepare our song lyrics for recitation. 5 m.
In-Class Activities:
We will read our chosen song lyrics aloud as poetry noting the author. 30-35 m. We will be given two new vocabulary terms; rhyme and rhythm 5-10 m. We will prepare a two to three paragraph defense of our song lyrics and why they should be considered poetry for homework. 10-15 m.
Assessment: individual oral assessments
Homework: Song lyric defense.

We will study the different types of rhyme schemes and rhythmic feet. 20-30 m. Rhyme schemes and rhythmic feet worksheet for homework. 10-25 m.
