  • Episode 14: Mother’S Day Reads
Not Your Mother’s Library Transcript Episode 14: Mother’s Day Reads (Brief intro music) Leah: Hello, and welcome to Not Your Mother’s Library, a readers’ advisory podcast from the Oak Creek Public Library. I’m Leah, one of your hosts. Rachel is also virtually here. This month, guys…this month we need to tweak the title a little bit, because we’re celebrating Mother’s Day! This episode will be all about our mothers’ favorite books, which means that for Rachel and I, this is our mother’s library. Rachel: Hi, everyone. It’s Rachel. As Leah pointed out, we are here to celebrate Mother’s Day. This year, the national holiday takes place on Sunday, May 10th, so be sure to create an artistic portrait out of noodles before that date hits. You know what else makes a great gift? Books! My mum is a mystery enthusiast. Give her a murder to solve, and she’ll be at her most content. She is actually in the process of writing her own series of cozies. For those who aren’t as familiar with what that means, cozies are a mystery subgenre. They focus more on the story, setting, and characters surrounding a whodunit than an in-depth criminal procedure or graphic depictions of violence. Think of M.C. Beaton’s “Agatha Raisin” or the TV show “Murder, She Wrote.” I’ve read the first few novels in mum’s series, which are currently on the road to publication, and they are flat-out really good. I realize that as her daughter I am partial, but I also used to be a copyeditor and have read some genuinely awful manuscripts, so I’m betting that experience balances out my bias.

  • 2015 Christmas Concert Artist Announcement-Edited
For Immediate Release Broadway Star Laura Osnes and Beloved British Actor Martin Jarvis Join Mormon Tabernacle Choir for Annual Christmas Concert Back by popular demand after charming audiences at this summer’s Pioneer Day concert, Broadway star Laura Osnes will join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for their annual Christmas concerts on December 17, 18 and 19 in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. Taking the stage with Osnes will be acclaimed British screen and voice actor Martin Jarvis. Under the direction of Mack Wilberg, music director of the Choir, and Ryan Murphy, associate music director, these powerhouse talents will ring in the holiday spirit for audiences young and old. But that’s not all. Osnes and Jarvis will be joined by four Metropolitan Opera soloists — Erin Morley, soprano; Tamara Mumford, mezzo-soprano; Ben Bliss, tenor; and Tyler Simpson, bass — adding a classical dimension to the musical repertoire. This is going to be an unforgettable concert,” said Ron Jarrett, president of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. “Where else can you find such a depth of talent in all performing disciplines all on one stage? We are truly blessed to have this fabulous ensemble of artists spend Christmas with us.” Today’s carefully guarded announcement was eagerly anticipated by thousands in the community who have attended the Christmas concerts for over a decade. The free performances are arguably the hottest tickets in town during the Christmas season, and this year will be no exception. “We are overwhelmed and humbled by the response of our audiences each year,” said music director Mack Wilberg.

  • “Revenge in Shakespeare's Plays”
“REVENGE IN SHAKESPEARE’S PLAYS” “MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING” – LECTURE/CLASS WRITTEN: In the second half of 1598 or 99 -- no later because the role of Dogberry was sometimes replaced by the name of “Will Kemp”, the actor who always played the role; Kemp left the Lord Chamberlain’s Men in 1599. AGE: 34-35 Years Old (B.1564-D.1616) CHRONO: Seventh in the line of Comedies after “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”, “The Comedy of Errors”, “Taming of the Shrew”, “Love’s Labours Lost”, “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream”, “The Merchant of Venice”. QUARTO: A Quarto edition of the play appeared in 1600. GENRE: “Tragicomic” SOURCE: “Completely and entirely unhistorical” VERSION: The play is “Shakespeare’s earliest version of the more serious story of the man who mistakenly believes his partner has been unfaithful to him”. (“Othello” for one.) SUCCESS: There are no records of early performances but there are “allusions to its success.” HIGHLIGHT: The comedy was revived in 1613 for a Court performance at Whitehall before King James, his daughter Princess Elizabeth and her new husband in May 1613. AFTER: Oddly, the play was “performed only sporadically until David Garrick’s acclaimed revival in 1748”. CRITICS: 1891 – A.B. Walkley: “a composite picture of the multifarious, seething, fermenting life, the polychromatic phantasmagoria of the Renaissance.” 1905 – George Bernard Shaw: “a hopeless story, pleasing only to lovers of the illustrated police papers BENEDICTS: Anthony Quayle, John Gielgud, Michael Redgrave, Donald Sinden BEATRICES: Peggy Ashcroft, Margaret Leighton, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith RECENT: There was “a boost in recent fortunes with the well-received 1993 film version directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Branagh and Emma Thompson.” SETTING: Messina in northeastern Sicily at the narrow strait separating Sicily from Italy.

  • Consumer Alert Regarding Ticket Purchasing
CONSUMER ALERT REGARDING TICKET PURCHASING With so many high-profile and popular events coming to Wharton Center, we have found more and more patrons are being exploited by unscrupulous ticket resellers. Often our tickets are being marketed on secondary ticket websites before the operator of the website has even purchased tickets – and they are selling at prices far above the price you will pay through whartoncenter.com. Purchasing tickets to Wharton Center events through another source might result in paying too much for your tickets or paying for tickets that are invalid. If there is a problem with your tickets, you may not be able to receive help from Wharton Center’s Ticket Office as there will be no in-house record of your transaction. In addition, we are unable to contact you if there is a change in performance time, traffic notices, etc. To avoid being ensnared by unscrupulous ticket resellers: • Bookmark our website, whartoncenter.com for ticket and show information. • Sign up for our eClub to receive information directly from Wharton Center. We urge you to protect yourself by purchasing directly from the official source for Wharton Center tickets: at whartoncenter.com; by phone at 1-800-WHARTON (1-800-942-7866); or at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office at Wharton Center. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Please observe the lighted exit signs located throughout the building and theatre(s). All patrons should note all exits, especially those closest to your seat location. Our staff and ushers are trained to assist patrons through multiple emergency situations. If you have questions regarding our safety and security procedures, please contact the house management staff at Wharton Center by calling 884-3119 or 884-3116.
