ACCUPLACER Preparation

The TLC Web site offers you a number of opportunities to prepare for the ACCUPLACER, UTEP’s placement test. If you have not yet taken the ACCUPLACER for either the Texas Success Initiative or for placement, then an introduction to the ACCUPLACER is available at the TLC website http://academics.utep.edu/tlc: click on “Prospective Students,” click on “ACCUPLACER,” and click on “Workshop Presentation.”

Math Preparation: For help in preparing to take the ACCUPLACER math test, you can go to http://academics.utep.edu/tlc, click on “Prospective Students,” and click on “ACCUPLACER.” Under the Math section, you can then click on math quizzes, a practice ACCUPLACER test, or math workshop manuals. If you have difficulty working any math problems, then you can bring those math problems with you to the TLC, sit down with a math tutor, and work those problem areas. (Remember, tutors are only available during posted hours.)

Reading Preparation: If you need help in preparing for the reading portion of the ACCUPLACER, we recommend that you go to http://academics.utep.edu/tlc, click on “Prospective Students,” click on “ACCUPLACER,” and click on “ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension Test” for an introduction to that section of the test. For more help, we suggest that you go to the following sites: a) http://english.glendale.cc.ca.us/topic.html - This site has interactive practice questions that focus on finding main ideas in paragraphs. b) http://www.gsu.edu/~wwwrtp/instrdg.htm - This site provides a general reading practice test. c) http://literacynet.org/cnnsf/ - This site provides an extensive archive of stories; each one accompanied by an outline, questions and activities.

If you have any difficulties with any of the exercises on these sites, print out a copy of the exercise, bring to the TLC Writing Room, and work with a tutor. (Remember, tutors are only available during posted hours.) Study Guides: 1) Any study guide for the SAT, ACT, or THEA (formerly known as TASP) tests can prove helpful. 2) If you don’t wish to buy a study guide, then you may come to the TLC Learning Assistance Lab (LAL), Room 326, and work with one of ours.

Software: 1) The Princeton Review Inside the SAT & ACT: 2003 Deluxe has a number of good practice exercises and explanations in reading, writing, and math. 2) Easy Writer software provides pre-written essays and guides students through the review, revision, and editing processes. 3) These materials are available in the Learning Assistance Lab (LAL), Room 326. Please check in with the Front Desk and get a temporary ID if you aren’t a registered UTEP student.

Computer Access: 1) If you don’t have a computer at home, you can come to the TLC and use one of the computers in the Learning Assistance Lab (Room 326). You can access the Web sites in the previous sections in this manner. 2) Check in with the Front Desk please and get a temporary ID if you aren’t a registered UTEP student.
