1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE THE RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH 12 SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM ON RECEIVING 13 THE FIRSTPLACE AWARD OF DISTINCTION FOR ITS 14 WORK AT THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MODEL 15 UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE. 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased 18 to learn that the Richland Northeast High School Model United 19 Nations (MUN) team received the firstplace Award of Distinction 20 for its work at the National High School Model United Nations 21 (NHSMUN) Conference; and 22 23 Whereas, further, the team scored the highest number of points of 24 any of the four teams receiving the Award of Distinction. Richland 25 Northeast (RNE) received the Award of Distinction for its position 26 paper on the Republic of Turkey, the country the team represented; 27 and 28 29 Whereas, in November, Richland Northeast students began 30 researching and writing position papers for each of the nine 31 committees where Turkey was represented. The team also 32 concentrated on parliamentary procedure, policy and solution 33 speeches, ideas for working papers and resolutions, and plans for 34 committee work; and 35 36 Whereas, led by Emily Nielsen and Asia Rivers, junior copresident 37 and senior copresident, respectively, RNE’s MUN team captured 38 the award for the twentyfourth time. Returning senior members 39 were also critical to the team’s success and included Joe Palekas, 40 Ben Crawford, Cory Nelson, and Hannah Ekeh. Other returning 41 members were Paxton Haven, Wesley Skidmore, Iqra Tabassum, 42 and Kevin O’Dell, and new members included Chris Kannaday,
[4098] 1 1 David Shulman, Sarah Brotman, Qi Jin, Adam Groth, and Darrien 2 Ennels; and 3 4 Whereas, Lynn Washington, faculty sponsor, received a pin from 5 the International MUN Association for her thirtyone years of 6 attendance at the conference. She has served longer than any other 7 advisor, and her RNE teams have taken home six secondplace 8 awards over the thirtyone years of her conference attendance, in 9 addition to their twentyfour firstplace awards; and 10 11 Whereas, held in New York, this year’s conference was the largest, 12 with more than 3,100 student delegates representing one hundred 13 ninety delegations from across the United States and twenty 14 foreign countries. While attending the conference, the present RNE 15 MUN team also visited the Turkish Mission to the United Nations 16 for a briefing with Second Secretary A. Noyan Ozkaya; and 17 18 Whereas, proud of these students’ fine achievements, the House 19 takes great pleasure in saluting the members of the Richland 20 Northeast High School Model United Nations team for capturing 21 the firstplace Award of Distinction at the NHSMUN Conference. 22 Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 27 by this resolution, congratulate the Richland Northeast High 28 School Model United Nations team on receiving the firstplace 29 Award of Distinction for its work at the National High School 30 Model United Nations Conference. 31 32 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 33 Sabrina Suber, principal, and Lynn Washington, faculty sponsor, 34 of Richland Northeast High School. 35 XX 36
