Rhyme and Reason

Rhyme is a crucial poetic and musical device, but there are many different ways that authors use it. Here are some important definitions. Remember, rhyme is about SOUND, not spelling!!!

Internal Rhyme: when a poet rhymes within a line of poetry, not at the end.

End Rhyme: when a poet places rhymes at the end of a line of poetry.

Slant Rhyme: also known as almost rhyme, these are words that ALMOST rhyme (hate and break, for instance) This is considered a more interesting original form of rhyme because it offers more word choices.

Perfect Rhyme: these are rhymes that you see most often in children’s poems, songs and form poetry. (cat, hat; love, glove; broken, smokin’)

Rhyme Scheme: this is a pattern of rhyme that a poet or song writer follows, and each rhyming word is assigned a letter. A, B, C, D, and so forth. Each letter much match with the word it is rhymed with.
