Installation Mass Worship The Prayer of St. Francis The Mass of Installation of the Twelfth Archbishop of Santa Fe The Most Reverend Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. John C. Wester Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Wester's Coat of Arms reflects Faith, Devotion and Union with Christ - and contains symbols of his personal journey of faith: The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mary the Mother of God, and words from the Gospel of Saint John the Evangelist. The La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno is an ancient order of Catholic men devoted to heart surrounded by thorns and surmounted by flames is the traditional symbol of the the Passion of Our Lord. It has its roots in the flagellant societies of medieval Europe, SacredT Heart of Jesus. This represents Archbishop Wester's personal devotion to the Sacred Heart especially southern Spain from whence many of the original settlers in New Mexico came in the and his complete reliance on Christ's ineffable and unfathomable love. As the Church prays during 16th Century. Besides contributing to the religious art of New Mexico, their prayer forms and the Eucharist, it is in Christ that we live and move and have our being. It was on Friday, June 19, hymns (called alabados) have been instrumental in forming the devotional life and spirituality of 1998, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, that Archbishop Wester received news of the Holy Father's call the lay people. The hymn tonalities used by them reflect Arabic influences. Today Los Hermanos to become a bishop. Penitentes from our Archdiocese offer the communion hymn O Pan del Cielo Admirable - O Most Admirable Bread of Heaven. The red rose, or rosette, is an ancient symbol of Mary, the Mystical Rose. Archbishop Wester's family has lived for many years in Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Daly City where he attended grammar school and furthered his deep devotion to the Mother of God, a devotion which took its beginnings in the Native American Dance of Thanksgiving cradle of his home where the rosary was often prayed. The Book of the Gospels is open to the first words of the Gospel of Saint John the Evangelist, The Pueblo Indians have dwelt in the American Southwest for thousands of years before the Archbishop Wester's patron saint: In Principio erat Verbum et Verbum erat apud Deum. (In the Spanish arrived. They were evangelized by Franciscan Missionaries and remain mostly Roman beginning was the Word and the Word was with God.) Archbishop Wester humbly acknowledges his Catholic to this day. The Eagle Dance is an offering of praise and exaltation directed to the desire to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people, at all times and in all places. By Almighty. Its various movements depict the eagle in flight as it gives glory to God by its very following Christ's call, he seeks to reflect the light of Christ in our world. being. In the spirit of cultural adaptation of the Liturgy (see Sacrosanctum Concilium 37-40), this prayer is offered post communion. The pronounced use of blue and green gives witness to Archbishop Wester's Swedish and Irish heritage, and so honors his father and mother, Charles and Helen, the first teachers of their son in the The Laguna Eagle Dance was started in 1935 by Phillip Riley, Sr. and his brothers, Roger, Bruce ways of faith and love. and John Riley. • Parish Apostolate: New Opportunities in the Local Church
IV. PARISH APOSTOLATE: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LOCAL CHURCH by John E. Rybolt, C.M. Beginning with the original contract establishing the Community, 17 April 1625, Vincentians have worked in parishes. At fIrst they merely assisted diocesan pastors, but with the foundation at Toul in 1635, the fIrst outside of Paris, they assumed local pastorates. Saint Vincent himself had been the pastor of Clichy-Ia-Garenne near Paris (1612-1625), and briefly (1617) of Buenans and Chatillon les-Dombes in the diocese of Lyons. Later, as superior general, he accepted eight parish foundations for his community. He did so with some misgiving, however, fearing the abandonment of the country poor. A letter of 1653 presents at least part of his outlook: ., .parishes are not our affair. We have very few, as you know, and those that we have have been given to us against our will, or by our founders or by their lordships the bishops, whom we cannot refuse in order not to be on bad terms with them, and perhaps the one in Brial is the last that we will ever accept, because the further along we go, the more we fmd ourselves embarrassed by such matters. l In the same spirit, the early assemblies of the Community insisted that parishes formed an exception to its usual works. The assembly of 1724 states what other Vincentian documents often said: Parishes should not ordinarily be accepted, but they may be accepted on the rare occasions when the superior general .. , [and] his consul tors judge it expedient in the Lord.2 229 Beginnings to 1830 The founding document of the Community's mission in the United States signed by Bishop Louis Dubourg, Fathers Domenico Sicardi and Felix De Andreis, spells out their attitude toward parishes in the new world, an attitude differing in some respects from that of the 1724 assembly.

Volume 24, Issue 3 — September 8, 2019 September 8, 2019 Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary To the Members of the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins, One of the greatest challenges of celibates and virgins is to realize the primordial challenge from God that we be fertile and multiply. For us, the first part of responding to this challenge is to imagine how this is even possible. Obviously, this will be accomplished as a spiritual fecundity. Our life of prayer for the Church and the world, both in general and in particular is a primary way to fulfill this duty. Are there other ways? This will depend on our method of “living in the world.” Whatever it is that we do, be it Church work or completely secular labor, there we encounter fertile soil. Each of us then must determine how best we can help the Word of God take root, both by our example and by our words. God will give the increase, but we must plant seeds. Fecundity of any kind should always be the Inside this Issue Page result of love and therefore love is the primary seed which we Something Ancient - will plant. NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, challenges, and hopes... Dear Friend of NRVC, In preparation for the 2008 presidential election, Americans around the country examined their values and priorities, and compared them with those of our two presidential candidates, so that they would be well-informed about the country’s present challenges and their own hopes for the country’s future. In a similar fashion, last year NRVC chose to take a closer look at our future, our challenges and our hopes so that we can be well- informed about what lies ahead. Our first priority was to launch a major study on vocations to religious life, in collaboration with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), which we did in the fall. When the results are finally released later this year, the “best practices” gleaned from this study will serve as a guide for religious insti- tutes to develop their future, vocation strategies. Complementing this project, the annual VISION survey from VocationMatch.com in- dicates a rise in the number of inquiries to religious life for the third year in a row—another hopeful sign for our future! Our Executive Board is also looking to secure the future of NRVC by identifying our major priorities for the coming three years as our previous strategic plan will be completed in 2010. The need, the energy, and the passion to promote new membership in religious life are there. I felt it in Louisville, KY, where approximately 450 vocation ministers processed through the downtown streets raising vocation awareness.

Matthew 5:7 Holding up a copy of "Hustler" magazine, former FBI agent William Kelly showed the women, most of whom are grandmothers and mothers, the color photograph of a mock crucifixion of a woman. "The biggest purchasers of these porn magazines are the 12-17 year- olds," Kelly told the audience, many of whom registered surprise at his statement. Pornography was only one of the many topics addressed by more than 200 women who attended the seventh bicnnal conference of the Florida Council of Catholic Women at the Konover Hotel in Miami Beach last week. The women from around the state also listened to experts on migrant labor, pro-life, and family life, during two days of presentations on the theme, "Peace in Today's World."
