These By-Laws (Passed 2-17-17) are to establish standards on Student Government Association Election Campaigns:

Section A: Election Campaign Timeline 1. Announcement of candidacy may be made at any time during the academic year. 2. Official campaigning begins after spring break. 3. The Election shall be held during the third week of April. 4. The Election Committee will make the election results known to the public after review and the resolution of any outstanding problems.

Section B: Election Campaign Policies and Legal Guidelines 1. Candidates are expected to follow all rules laid out in this by-law. 2. Individuals must follow the policies set by IUSB, which include, but are not limited to, the rules set for special events and campus housing. a. Candidates will be provided with a copy of these policies at orientation. If an individual is unable to attend then they are expected to notify the election committee that they have accessed, read, and understand the rules. 3. Persons must follow State and Federal Laws. 4. Any candidate found to have violated the aforementioned policies will be subject to removal from the election and referral to the Office of Student Conduct following a review by the Election Committee. 5. Individuals may submit requests to the Election Committee to review candidates’ actions or behaviors while campaigning.

Section C: Candidate Promotion 1. Individuals may use materials to promote their candidacy and retain the right to advocate for themselves during the election. a. Persons may enlist the help of others to support their candidacy, but the Election Committee must be notified of these supporters. Candidates are expected to be responsible for the actions of these verified individuals. b. Candidates and their verified supporters must be respectful of other candidates or campaigns. 2. All campaign promotional materials are subject to review and/or approval by the Election Committee and the Office of Student Life. a. Campaign promotional materials can include, but are not limited to: posters, fliers, signs, sidewalk chalk, public campaign social media pages, and emails. b. All correspondence between these groups will be confidential. 3. Candidates may utilize the different services offered on campus to campaign such as the ability to table and the ability to hang fliers on approved bulletin boards. a. The Election Committee will provide individuals with several opportunities throughout the campaign, including times to table and a candidate debate. Candidates will be given equal opportunity to use the resources provided by the committee.

4. Tokenism is prohibited. a. Candidates may NOT provide gifts or items that hold utility outside of promoting one’s candidacy, to individuals.

1 b. A pencil with a candidate’s name on it given to someone is an example of tokenism. While the object promotes the individual, it also provides the potential voter with additional value that could sway their vote.

Section D: Election Day Policies 1. Campaigning may continue on the day(s) of the election. 2. Candidates may NOT be near the polling locations while voting is occurring. 3. Candidates may NOT take voters to polling locations or the online voting site, but they may provide direction to persons as to where to go to vote on campus or online.

Section E: Appeals 1. If a candidate is disqualified or reprimanded by the committee then they may request an appeal through the Office of Student Life by which a third-party will examine the case.

The Election Committee shall have the authority to interpret, implement, and carry out the above rules and procedures as it sees fit.
