Istanbul Bilgi University student reports from New York via the first live webcast of the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting to the Laureate International Universities network

Derin Erpulat from Izmir reports for “Laureate Live” from President Clinton’s global leaders’ forum that included President Barack Obama and U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney

BALTIMORE, MD, Friday, September 28, 2012 — A student from Istanbul Bilgi University was one of three chosen from across the Laureate International Universities network to travel to New York to work as a student reporter on the first ever “Laureate Live” webcast of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), a leading annual gathering of world leaders. Public relations student, Ms. Derin Erpulat from Izmir, interviewed guest speakers and delegates attending CGI over the three-day conference on the “Laureate Live” webcast.

For the first time since its inception in 2005, CGI’s annual New York meeting was viewed remotely by more than 50,000 students and faculty from 39 institutions in the Laureate International Universities network on four continents via a multi-lingual webcast on September 24 and 25. In addition to the opening address by President Bill Clinton, Laureate students viewed live speeches of U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama, and met and interviewed more than 40 guest speakers who were attending the meeting.

“The Clinton Global Initiative is unquestionably one of the world’s most dynamic forums because it convenes leaders who are committed to solving humanity’s most intractable problems and challenges. We are proud to be part of this vital mission because our own mission, as the world’s largest network of universities, is to be here for good by imbuing our students with social as well as professional purpose. I’m particularly proud of the role played in this year’s webcast by our three Laureate students who so impressively represented our network and their home institutions. Derin and her colleagues epitomize all that’s great about our international student community.” said Douglas L. Becker, Chairman and CEO of Laureate Education, Inc.

Ms. Erpulat was one of three honors students chosen to attend CGI because of their commitment to social activism as well as language and communication skills. The Laureate Live webcast was made available to the participating universities in English with translation in Spanish and Portuguese and closed captioning. The live feed was enhanced by exclusive onsite interviews with global leaders of private enterprise as well as public policy bodies and non-governmental organizations.

Laureate International Universities has made several global commitments to the Clinton Global Initiative, including the creation of the Richard Riley Scholarship program that provided 1,000 teachers with access to graduate degree programs in 2008 and an expansion of Laureate’s support of the International Youth Foundation’s YouthActionNet® program in 2010.
