College Credit Plus Overview

Enrolling in a College Credit Plus (CCP) course means that a student is committed to taking a college course. This is not a decision that should be taken lightly; both the student and parent/guardian should have a discussion regarding the seriousness of taking a college course and ramifications of the grade and credit earned by the student. Any student admitted into a CCP course will be expected and required to preform at the same level as traditional college students. Please review the information below carefully before deciding to enroll in a CCP course.

1. On a college campus (obtain a separate “On-Campus Enrollment Packet” after tonight’s meeting or contact Mrs. Boyd)  You can attend the college/university either part-time or full-time. You may combine courses at CSHS with college/university courses.  You will have to decide whether to take a course for college credit only or high school and college credit. o If you choose to take the course for college credit only, you will have to pay for the cost of tuition, textbooks, materials, and fees o If you choose to take the course for high school and college credit, the cost of tuition and textbooks will be paid for by CSHS. Materials and fees will be paid for by the college/university  Students who are eligible for CCP courses may participate in the program during the summer term of a public or participating private college/university or out-of-state college/university participating in the program. Grades will post in the fall semester.  If choosing to take CCP courses on a college/university campus, you still must meet high school graduation requirements in order to earn a high school diploma. Make sure the number and types of courses you take will meet CSHS graduation requirements. You should keep in mind that the grades you earn in college courses will affect your grade point average and your eligibility to graduate.  When attending the college campus, participating on a part-time basis means that you must schedule classes at the high school and college. Yearly schedules and vacation times are usually different for high school and college. Sometimes it may be difficult or impossible to take the courses you want at both schools because of scheduling conflicts.  You are responsible for giving your counselor your summer, fall, and spring semester schedules as soon as you have it set up with your college counselor.  High school credit will be granted only upon receipt of the official transcript/grade verification from the college/university. The high school is not responsible for, nor involved in any conflict regarding grades and/or attendance at the college/university.  You are responsible for transportation to the college/university. Neither the high school nor the college/university will provide transportation.  If you take courses on campus, you will not be at your high school full time. You might miss out on participating in some high school activities as a result of your enrollment in college.  You will be in classes with much older students.  Students need to submit the Intent Form (included in the On-Campus CCP Enrollment Packet) by April 1, 2016 in order to be eligible to take courses on a college campus (State mandate).  You must schedule an individual meeting with Mrs. Boyd before starting the CCP on-campus process.

2. At Canton South High School, taught by a qualified CSHS teacher (adjunct- professor certified by the awarding college/university). This option is not available for middle school students.  Most face-to-face CCP courses taught at CSHS are Canton South faculty who meet college faculty requirements. These adjunct professors: o Use college textbook, syllabus, and course materials o Follow the college/university course objectives, learning outcomes, and calendar/deadline  Tentatively, American Politics will be taught by a Kent Stark college professor at CSHS.  Students taking CCP courses at CSHS earn the same credit they would have earned if they took the course on a college campus  Students earn college credit while simultaneously earn high school credit  Student have to turn in COMPLETED CCP enrollment packets to the Student Services Office by March 11, 2016 in order to eligible to take CCP courses at CSHS. 3. Online (currently, all online CCP courses taken at CSHS are through Stark State College)  Online CCP courses are taught by a college/university professor. Course material, papers, projects, and homework are completed and submitted on-line to the college professor. This professor is the teacher of record and primarily communicates via email with the student regarding any issues with the course.  A CSHS teacher is assigned to be the support teacher for online CCP courses, but this teacher only reports grades and may be able to provide minor guidance to students taking the CCP course.  Ideally, a successful online CCP student is an independent worker, motivated, a strong reader, and ready to take the course seriously.  Student have to turn in COMPLETED CCP enrollment packets to the Student Services Office by March 11, 2016 in order to eligible to take CCP courses at CSHS.  After students apply to Stark State, they will receive a letter about orientation explaining that students must login and complete their online “Succeeding Online Orientation” prior to the first day of class: www.starkstate.edu/ccplusorientation/  “Angel” is the online server. Students may also need to utilize Audio Boo for verbal dictations which can be completed using a phone. About a week before the course, students will need to make sure they have their Angel login/password information and have been able to successfully log in. Direct link to Angel: angel.starkstate.edu. If there is an issue, call the Stark State Help Desk at 330.494.6170, ext. 4357.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN TAKING CCP COURSES IN HIGH SCHOOL:

. Students are starting their college transcript. This could affect future selective program acceptance (i.e., colleges of nursing are competitive programs and a lower GPA may negatively affect acceptance status). . Students may take a maximum of 30 equivalent college credit hours (combination of high school and college credit) each school year and a maximum of 120 credit hours during high school. If student takes over the maximum amount, the family will have to pay the additional hours taken. . Students taking CCP courses in high school may ultimately affect their available financial aid in the future. Financial aid is capped at 180 hours. Whatever a student takes as CCP will be subtracted from student’s available aid. . Student athletes in the CCP program must carry a combination of 5 classes (each class at least ½ credit per semester) at the college and high school. . The grades for students who participate in CCP in the summer will post in the fall. . Students are responsible for returning textbooks at the end of the course. Textbooks not returned will be added to the student’s fees. . It is strongly recommended students contact the college/university they may be thinking of attending after high school graduation to inquire about CCP credits – will my CCP credits be applied to requirements toward my major or will my CCP credits be applied as elective requirements? The college/university you attend after high school has the last and final word of what CCP courses are accepted for degree requirements. It is your responsibility to contact the college admission office and verify this issue. . It is also recommended that the student keep each course syllabus and obtain a college transcript at the end of each academic year to verify that all the completed college credits appear on the college transcript. CSHS does not assume any liability or responsibility for what appears on the student’s college transcript. . Withdrawing or failing a CCP course: If the student withdraws from a college course within the first 5-15 days (number of days varies depending on the college/university) of the course, the student will be rescheduled for high school classes and no record of the college course will appear on the student’s transcript. However, if the student withdraws from the college course after the 5th day of class, check with your college admissions counselor to inquire of the penalty (depending on the college/university), either a “W” – withdrawn or a “WF” – withdrawn/fail will appear on the student’s transcript. “W” does not calculate into the GPA, but WF does calculate into the GPA. The student/family may be financially responsible for a W/WF course. At CSHS, if the drop is not teacher recommended, students who withdraw from a CCP class after the 5th school day at CSHS will receive a “WF” withdraw fail” on their transcript and will be calculated into the student’s cumulative GPA. . Selective Service – State statute requires that all Ohio resident male students, ages 18 to 26, register with the Selective Service. Failure to do so may result in the student being charged and affect future financial aid status. To register on-line or for on-line verification of registration go to www.sss.gov.
