COA Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes February 19, 2008 1:30-3:30 p.m. in L-237

Present: B. Grill (Chair), R. Brem (Vice-Chair), Dr. J. Jackson, S. Gerstle, L. Bollentino, Dr. S. Robinson, Dean P. Simon, Dean Jones and C. Campbell.

Guest: A. Kircher, R. Majlesi, N. Dave and E. Loretto.

Absent: M. Wu.

Meeting started at 1:30p.m.

 Comm 44--MSU (Brem/Simon) to approve the Communications 44 with corrections. Discussion centered on the role unit plans and the approval of the new courses and updates. Dr. Jackson will provide a copy of the unit plans to the Curriculum Committee electronically. It was recommended that the department representative be available to present the reason for the change or addition of courses.

 Hum248AG--MSU(Brem/Bollentino) Alex Pappas presented a background for the Humanities 248AG, this need to go to the Library for approval and for corrections(deletion of additional blank pages).

 Dr. Jackson has made a formal request that the COA Curriculum Committee look into non-credit or not-for-credit options for situations like Mastic Center.

 Laura indicated that all “new” courses need to be fully articulated and this will not take place until around Fall 2009. There is an alternative method in which students may need to maintain their syllabi and then they would have to challenge this prior to it being fully accepted.

 Bio 2 & Bio 4-- MSU(Gerstle/Simon) to approve the course outline with corrections. There was a discussion that we should phase out Bio 18 and 19. Biol 2 and 4 cannot be articulated until fall 2009 for CSU GE Breadth and IGETC requirements. Counselors may not recommend that they take the Bio 2 & 4 if they are not articulated. Both faculty members who were representing the discipline, moving from four units to five units, this allows for consistency amongst the two of the three colleges (Merritt/Laney) that offer this course. All the Biology faculty agree that it makes more sense academically because the students need more lecture time, it does not add to the lab time.

 POSCI 001 / DE Addendum--MSU (Jones/Gerstle) to approve the POSCI 001 DE Addendum  Course Updates: BUS 2, BUS 5, LRNRE 213A, LRNRE 213B--MSU (Simon/Brem) to approve all four course updates.

 HLTOC 205 Pathophysiology--MSU (Brem, Gerstle) to approve new course HLTOC 205. It was noted that this is a stand-alone course, although this is not designated (yet) on first page of Course Outline. Naren Dave pointed out that there will be a certificate in Medical Terminology in the future. At that point, Dean will need to take new Certificate to Regional Deans Meeting for endorsement.

 Course De-activations:LASG 48, 19, and 248--MSU (Brem, Gerstle) approved.

 Discussion re: Format for SLO / COA--It was proposed to adopt “2 Column” model used by Laney College as acceptable; however, faculty who wish to adopt the extended (7 Column) model are free to do so. MSU (Gerstle/Brem) approved.

 Report on District-wide Meeting of Curriculum Chairs: New terminology for certificates: All current certificates remain with new names

18 units or more = “Certificate of Achievement” Will be on student’s transcript

Less than 18 units = “Certificate of Proficiency” Will NOT be on transcript

There is now a possibility of a certificate between 12 and 18 units that does appear on the transcript; it will also be a “Certificate of Achievement” and must go through the same process of certificate approval i.e. Regional Vocational Deans and System office in Sacramento.

 Items to Add to Future Curriculum Committee Agenda: o Role of Department Chairs in curriculum issues (Outlines, Syllabi, and Lesson Plans) o Recommended preparations for all transferable courses o Membership and Constitution of Curriculum Committee o The Role of Curriculum Committee in fostering innovation o How Non-degree programs fit into the larger picture of COA programs

Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. The next meeting is 03/04/08 at 1:30 p.m. in L237.
