Smalls of Grays Hill was 20 shot and killed in the line of duty at the age of thirty on September 21 27, 1985; and 22 23 Whereas, Trooper Smalls served his State as a Highway Patrolman 24 for nine years, and nobly and honorably gave his life in the service 25 of his fellow South Carolinians; and 26 27 Whereas, Trooper Smalls served so honorably that his funeral was 28 attended by nearly three hundred lawmen from at least ten states; 29 and 30 31 Whereas, Trooper Smalls also served his country in the United 32 States Army, and continued to serve as a sergeant in the Army 33 National Guard until his untimely death; and 34 35 Whereas, Trooper Smalls was an outstanding member of his 36 community, holding positions as superintendent of the Sunday 37 School class at New Church of Christ in Grays Hill, president of 38 the Young People’s Movement at that church, vice president of the 39 Beaufort Elementary School PTO, and vice president of the Grays 40 Hill Community Association; and 41

1 [1414] 1 1 Whereas, Trooper Smalls is survived by two sons, Kevin M. and 2 Bruce K. II, and by his mother, Mrs. Thelma S. Blue. Now, 3 therefore, 4 5 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 6 concurring: 7 8 That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, 9 express sorrow at the tragic death of Trooper First Class Bruce K. 10 Smalls and continue to remember his proud life and service to the 11 State of South Carolina, and request that the Commission of the 12 Department of Transportation name a portion of Interstate 95, 13 beginning at the seven mile marker extending South to the South 14 Carolina Welcome Center, in honor of his memory. 15 16 Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to 17 Bruce K. Smalls II, Kevin M. Smalls, and Mrs. Thelma S. Blue. 18 ----XX----
