The Alhambra in the Granada region of Spain was a palace, a citadel, a fortress and the home of sultans in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Moors of North Africa occupied southern Spain. “Al Hamra” means “red fortress.” The fortress and scimitar (a Moorish saber with a curved blade) make the shape of an A on the seal of our school. Alhambra’s mascot is the lion because of a famous Lion Fountain at the Alhambra palace; our school colors are green and red.

~ 2 ~ Letter from the Principal

Dear Alhambra Lions,

Welcome to the 2011/2012 school year. I would like to introduce myself. I am Dr. Lisa Scinto your school principal. I am very excited about the new school year. As you collect your schedules, meet your new teachers and get re-acquainted with your friends, I want to encourage you to take some time to think about your education and your educational community.

You have the opportunity to fulfill your life’s dreams if you come to school, study hard, and take all your classes seriously. The future is yours!

My goal is that Alhambra High School will be a place where all students have the opportunity to achieve excellence in their areas of their interests; be they mathematics, science, languages, history, or the arts. My hope is that the Alhambra Lions will be champions in the classroom, as well as on the stage, in the concert halls and the court and fields. Your teachers and coaches will work hard to prepare you. But, only you can make this a reality.

I want to ask that you not only be good scholars and competitors, but also good citizens of the Alhambra community. Respect yourselves and others. Get involved in the many clubs, activities and sports here on campus. Make time to be a volunteer, do community service; make our community a better place because you are here.

~ 3 ~ Again, welcome to the new school year. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you very soon. My door is open, drop in and say hello!

Best wishes in all your endeavors, Dr. M. Lisa Scinto, Ed.D

STEPS IN PREPARING FOR COLLEGE

FRESHMAN YEAR  Seek college preparatory information with your parents, so that you and your parents can o Discuss with your counselor the classes you should be taking to graduate and meet your goals o Familiarize yourself with opportunities and expectations  Attend Freshman Parent Night or American Dream Academy  Participate in extracurricular activities, club or class events, sports and summer programs that will enrich your experience. Look for areas where you can exert creativity and leadership.  Write to colleges that interest you and plan a schedule of visits. Remember not to feel discouraged by your family’s financial situation if your parents do not have money in the bank for your college education. There is always a way to pay for your studies.

~ 10 ~  Begin a file that you will keep for four years: include copies of your report cards, test scores, honors and awards, and a list of your activities.  Maintain a strong grade point average. Develop good study habits and a study group of college-bound friends.

SOPHOMORE YEAR  Discuss your new schedule with your counselor to make sure you are taking the right courses. Remember; plan to make-up any “F” or “Incomplete.”  Attend Sophomore Parent Night.  Concentrate on courses that prepare you for your field of interest and maintain a strong grade point average in those areas. Plan to do your best on AIMS.  Review your schedule and grade point average with your counselor at the beginning of the school year to keep yourself on track.  Complete a vocational inventory so that you can begin to explore your own personal areas of interest.  Be involved in extracurricular activities. Seek volunteer opportunities.  Discuss with your counselor summer enrichment programs at the colleges and/or other productive activities for the summer months.

JUNIOR YEAR  Attend Junior Parent Night  Take the PSAT in October as preparation for taking the SAT or ACT later.  Create a file about colleges that appeal to you using resources in the counseling office and the library. Visit as many colleges as possible.  Read all college-related literature mailed to you. Beware of anything that costs you money, whether it is a way to pay for college or recognition book. There is no reason to pay for any of this information  Maintain a strong grade point average and continue to update your file.  Sign up to take the SAT or ACT in May or June: applications are in counseling office

SENIOR YEAR  Enroll in ACT/SAT preparatory class – see your counselor for help with this

~ 11 ~  Register early to take the SAT or ACT, if you haven’t taken it last spring.  Take the ASSET Test if plan to attend a Community College  Attend the Senior College Fair and make appointments to see college Financial Aid Advisors, and college representatives when they visit Alhambra  Obtain college applications from the counseling office or send for them yourself.
