Topics: Opening up of the West Project

OPENING UP OF THE WEST PROJECT

In this project, students will research and present information on the key issues on the Prairies during the period of 1870 – 1885. The focus is on the struggle of First Nations cultures to survive the Western expansion of Canada. Students will research four specific topics:

1. Extinction of the Bison 2. The Northwest Mounted Police (and the Cypress Hill Massacre) 3. The Treaty Process (specifically Treaty #6) & the Indian Act, 1876 4. Battles at Fish Creek and Batoche 5. Louis Riel

Information will be presented on a large poster or PowerPoint including written information, pictures/images/cartoon, and at least one map. You will have 2 classes for research in the computer lab and 1 work block for planning and textbook use.

Written information must be clearly presented with detailed factual content Images must be drawn or collaged with brief descriptions under each Maps must be clearly labeled.
