The Huron-Manistee National Forests, located on the east and west sides of the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, will soon be advertising for a Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep) located on the Baldwin/White Cloud Ranger District in Baldwin, Michigan. The forest is seeking interested applicants (internal federal government and external). This is a permanent position.

This position is established to perform timber sale preparation duties including, timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout as part of the timber organization on the Baldwin/White Cloud District.
Major Duties: Interprets complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground which are inconsistent with the prescription or marking guide. Huron-Manistee National Forests

Develops and drafts timber cruise plans. Applies instructions issued in a cruise plan. Provides field instruction to apprentice cruisers in fundamental timber measuring practices, cruise methods, and techniques. Must become Cruiser Certified within one year and maintain Cruiser Certification annually.
Interprets computer output reports, tables, and statistics to provide quantity and quality estimates of timber products.
Lays out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction, considering factors such as transportation system, topography, fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection and other related resource considerations. Determines acreage by map or aerial photograph methods, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or Global Positioning System (GPS).
Writes reports describing timber sale, resource, topographic features, and compliance of timber marking with guidelines. Interprets aerial photographs for information such as road locations, sale boundaries, survey monuments, and other features. Drafts sale area maps using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. Updates planned and completed project activity information in the Forest Activity reporting database (FACTS) and assists with updates to spatial GIS information related to projects prepared.
Provides technical assistance to specialists in the development of complex logging plans and preliminary road location.
Performs other multifunctional work, as assigned, in other areas of resource management such as wildlife, recreation, visuals, resource planning, and fire management.
