Daily print publication of The Ann Arbor News and online reporting at its affiliate www.mlive.com/ann-arbor will continue in the interim. Matt Kraner, formerly Chief Marketing Officer of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, was named President and Chief Executive Officer of AnnArbor.com LLC, and Tony Dearing, formerly Editor of the Flint Journal and Managing Editor of The Ann Arbor News was named Chief Content Leader. The Dario team designed four very different and unique printing and distribution projects for our group in Michigan. In Grand Rapids, they developed a greenfield project in a rural area 10 miles from our existing business office. In Kalamazoo, the project entailed an addition and extensive remodeling of our existing facility. A greenfield project which combined two newspaper's printing and distribution facilities into one building comprised the Valley project. Finally, our Flint project was a new facility in a one-block area adjacent to our existing printing and distribution facility. While these were from very different applications and two different teams, we were very pleased that all had common trends, which made the final projects successful. The Dario Design team took a very detailed approach to collecting data as they developed innovative solutions to our varying business needs. They listened to our concerns and translated those concerns into a variety of options to solve our problems. We did not receive "canned" solutions, but innovative responses. The integrity of these highly skilled professionals is above reproach. Having worked with many newspaper facility designers over the past 20 years, I can categorically say that this is certainly the most creative, innovative and honest group I have had the pleasure to work with on a proj ect. -
The Study Examines the System of Newspaper Admin- Istration Used by Booth Newspapers, Inc
ABSTRACT THE NATURE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF A DUAL HIERARCHY SYSTEM OF NEWSPAPER ADMINISTRATION BY John Alfred Kaufman, III The study examines the system of newspaper admin- istration used by Booth Newspapers, Inc. whereby each of the company's eight daily newspapers is run by an editor and a manager, the two positions coequal in authority and separate in responsibility. Historical evolution of the Booth concept of newspaper administration is traced and an account of the manner in which the concept was applied from newspaper to newspaper at the time research was conducted is included. Personal interviewing and survey research techniques were employed to compare management processes at a Booth newspaper with management processes at a newspaper administered along traditional lines with a single executive in overall charge. The findings indicate that the conventional form of newspaper administration promotes a healthier internal climate in the organization regarding interdepartmental relations than does the dual hierarchy system of administration used by Booth Newspapers, Inc.
