Reception Newsletter Autumn 2

Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome back! This half term our topic is ‘Frozen’, looking at all things to do with ice and snow!

General Information  If you have any urgent letters or things we need to know, please let us know personally as we do not have the opportunity to check book bags each day.  Please keep practicing the sound cards and keyword cards with your child as we will be focusing on these during our group time sessions. Children will receive the next set of keywords when they know all of their current sets. Notes from our group sessions will be written in your child’s reading record.  PE will be on a Tuesday. Children will need a named PE kit- black school shorts, a white t-shirt and black pumps, in a named pump bag please.  Uniform- Please make sure that all items of uniform are labelled clearly. Please check your child has the correct clothes as these can get muddled after PE lessons- even with supervision!  Please remember to look at our school blog http://theblog.is/greengates. You will be able to see images from our Stay and Play session and we will be uploading pictures and videos of what we have been learning about.  We will also be starting to share our learning on our school twitter account. If you would prefer your child NOT to be on tweets, please inform a member of staff ASAP. Literacy In literacy we are:  Saying and writing the initial sound in words.  Blending and segmenting simple cvc words like c-a-t, p-i-n, n-u-t etc.  Using our phonic knowledge and tricky words to write simple letters to Father Christmas, lists for icy expeditions, labels, captions for wintery poems and simple sentences about Arctic animals.  Reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books about snow and ice.  Continuing to build up a knowledge of high frequency/tricky words. Mathematics In Maths we are:  Investigating and naming 2D and 3D shapes in the environment.  Finding the number that is 1 more or less.  Beginning to use everyday language related to money.  Identifying and using 1p, 2p, 5p coins.  Counting, reading, writing and ordering numbers.  Counting backwards from 20-0.  Solving simple addition and subtraction.

Creative Curriculum We will be doing Frozen storytelling, investigating habitats in Polar Regions and comparing the animals that live there. We will be finding out about Inuit people and planning a polar expedition; thinking about how we will travel, what food we will need, designing a suitable vehicle for travelling over snow, investigating materials to keep us warm and building tents and shelters. We will also be experimenting and investigating ice to see if all things freeze. We will discover who can make their ice cube melt first or keep their ice cube frozen for the longest. We will be experimenting with different ways of using ice to paint/mix colours and we will be building some mini igloos!

If you have any frozen/polar/arctic themed toys or books that your child would like to share with the class please bring them in! Thank you for your continued support. Miss Ellis and Mrs Gibbons.
