4 Borussia Dortmund - AS Monaco FC Wednesday 3 October 2018 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit BVB Stadion Dortmund, Dortmund Match background

There are contrasting moods at Borussia Dortmund and Monaco as they prepare to renew acquaintance in the second round of Group A fixtures. • While Christian Pulišić scored a late winner for Dortmund at Club Brugge on matchday one, Monaco let slip a one- goal lead to lose 2-1 at home to Atlético Madrid, extending their run of UEFA Champions League defeats to three – and their winless streak to nine. Previous meetings • The teams' only past fixtures came in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals – Monaco's most recent European wins. The French side won the away first leg 3-2 in Germany, Shinji Kagawa getting Dortmund's second goal. • Radamel Falcao was on target in a 3-1 Monaco victory in the Stade Louis II second leg; Marco Reus got Dortmund's sole reply. Leonardo Jardim's side went on to lose home and away to Juventus in the semi-finals. Form guide Dortmund • Fourth in last season's Bundesliga, the German club are in the group stage for the third season running, and the seventh time in eight years – and they have already improved on their 2017/18 campaign, when they picked up only two points from their six fixtures. They went on to reach the UEFA Europa League round of 16, losing to Salzburg. • The victory at Club Brugge on matchday one was only Dortmund's second in their last 12 UEFA Champions League fixtures (D3 L7). • The German club picked up only one point at home in last season's group stage, and are without a win in their last four matches in the competition in Dortmund (D1 L3). • The 3-2 home win against Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg was Dortmund's only European victory last season, and is their only success in their last six European home matches (D1 L4). • Dortmund's record at home to French clubs reads W4 D3 L2. They have won only two of their last seven games at home to French visitors; a 3-0 win against Marseille in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage is the only success in the last five. Monaco • Second in last season, Monaco reached the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League semi-finals but finished bottom of their 2017/18 group having collected two points from their six games. • Monaco drew two of their three away games in 2017/18, losing the other; that win in Dortmund in 2016/17 is their sole success in their last eight European away fixtures (D3 L4). • Monaco are without a win in nine European games (D2 L7), since that 3-1 home victory against Dortmund in the quarter-final second leg in April 2017. • Monaco drew 1-1 at RB Leipzig on matchday one last season, and have lost on only one of their last eight trips to Germany (W4 D3). • Runners-up in 2004, Monaco remain the last French team to reach the UEFA Champions League final. Links and trivia • Dortmund coach Lucien Favre was in charge of Nice between 2016 and departing for Germany this summer, guiding the club to third place in Ligue 1 in 2016/17. Favre had also had a spell in France as a player, representing Toulouse between 1981 and 1983. • Abdou Diallo was at Monaco between 2014 and 2017, making ten Ligue 1 appearances. • Have played together: Marwin Hitz & Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg 2008–13) Ömer Toprak & Benjamin Henrichs (Leverkusen 2015–17) • Have played in Germany: Diego Benaglio (Stuttgart 2002–05, Wolfsburg 2008–17) Benjamin Henrichs (Leverkusen 2015–18) • Have played in France: Raphaël Guerreiro (Caen 2012/13, Lorient 2013–16) Dan-Axel Zagadou (Paris Saint-Germain B 2016/17) • International team-mates

8 Borussia Dortmund - AS Monaco FC Wednesday 3 October 2018 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit BVB Stadion Dortmund, Dortmund Head coach Lucien Favre Date of birth: 2 November 1957 Nationality: Swiss Playing career: Oulens, Lausanne, Neuchâtel Xamax, Servette (twice), Toulouse Coaching career: Echallens (youth), Echallens, Yverdon-Sport, Servette, Zürich, Hertha Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Nice, Borussia Dortmund • Capped 24 times by Switzerland, Favre was a playmaker during his playing days, with his career blighted by a persistent knee injury. Nevertheless, he won the 1985 Swiss league with Servette, two years after being voted Footballer of the Year. • During his first stint as a coach he guided Echallens into the second tier for the first time in their history, before winning promotion to the top flight at his new club Yverdon. In 2001 he won the Swiss Cup with Servette, also guiding the club to the UEFA Cup fourth round, and joined Zürich in spring 2003, winning the Swiss Cup (2005) as well as back-to-back league titles in 2006 and 2007, being voted Swiss coach of the year two years running. • In summer 2007, he left for Germany to join Hertha, unexpectedly guiding the capital side to fourth place in 2008/09. He was voted coach of the year in Germany after that term, but left his post in September. • Took over at Gladbach in February 2011 and guided them to safety via the relegation play-offs before finishing fourth the next season to return the club to Europe after 16 years. In 2014/15, a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga earned Gladbach a UEFA Champions League group stage place and Favre Germany's coach of the year award for a second time. • Resigned in September 2015 and took over at French side Nice the following May, overseeing a third-placed finish in 2016/17. Returned to Germany to take charge of Dortmund in May 2018. Leonardo Jardim Date of birth: 1 August 1974 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: Camacha, Chaves, Beira-Mar, Braga, Olympiacos, Sporting CP, Monaco • Played football at an amateur level during his youth and despite a passing interest in handball, it was always Jardim's intention to become a coach. Studied physical education at the University of Madeira, and at 24 became the youngest Portuguese coach to obtain a UEFA A licence. • Three years later, in 2001, appointed assistant coach at Madeiran club Camacha, where he impressed sufficiently to take charge of first-team duties two years later. Left to join Chaves midway through 2007/08, masterminding rise to the second division 18 months later. Also won promotion at Beira-Mar after taking charge in summer 2009 and preserved their top-flight status the following season before stepping down. • Signed a three-year contract when he succeeded Domingos Paciência at Braga in 2011 but left after only one having guided the club to a third-placed finish, helped by a record-breaking 13 successive league wins at the turn of the year, and into the UEFA Europa League round of 16. • Confirmed as the new coach of Olympiacos in June 2012, putting pen to paper on a two-year contract, but dismissed the following January despite a ten-point lead in the league. Resurfaced at Sporting, leading the club to second place in the 2013/14 Portuguese Liga. • Subsequently succeeded Claudio Ranieri at Monaco, guiding the club to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2014/15, when they finished third in Ligue 1. Jardim and Monaco were third again the following season; that set up a remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2016/17, an attack-minded young side also winning Ligue 1 ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, before finishing second a year later.
