OPPORTUNITY FOR AN ELECTRONICS ENGINEER OR PHYSICIST IN ANTARCTICA

Suitably qualified electric/electronic/computer engineers (B.Eng. or equivalent), or Physicists (BSc. Hons. or equivalent) are required for a contract appointment in the 54 th South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE 54) to Antarctica in 2015. The Centre for Space Science of North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus) http://www.nwu.ac.za/spaceresearch has a permanent cosmic-ray project as part of the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) in Antarctica http://www.sanap.org.za. This project operates on a continuous basis at the SANAE base. The contract consists of (a) a four-month training period in Potchefstroom, to commence on 1 July 2014, (b) expedition member training in Cape Town in November 2014, (c) the Antarctic expedition itself, lasting from December 2014 until approximately the middle of February 2016, and (d) a debriefing period until 31 March 2016. Key performance areas for the appointment are: (1) an ability to understand and assist with the development of electronic hardware, (2) knowledge of embedded (or microchip) programming, (3) an understanding of both Windows and Linux programming and the ability to work with their operating systems, (4) understanding all components of a neutron monitor as an integrated instrument, and (5) the ability to function independently and without supervision to record and deliver data and data reports promptly and on schedule. The duties in the position are: (a) learn the instrumentation and data analysis in Potchefstroom, (b) perform update tasks during the takeover under guidance of the previous expedition member, (c) continuously operate and maintain the neutron monitor, two riometers and seismological experiments, (d) submit monthly progress reports on these tasks, and (e) participate in all aspects of base work as determined by the expedition leader and/or other authorities.
