ENCLOSURE-I 2. 6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK: 6. 6.1 GENERAL DISCUSSION :

Hair is one of the vital parts of the body derived from ectoderm of skin, is protective appendages on the body [17]. Each hair grows in three cyclic phases anagen [ growth ], catagen [involution ] and telogen [ rest ][6].

DISORDERS:- Hair disorders include excessive hairiness (hirsutism and hypertrichosis), hair loss (alopecia), and ingrown beard hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae) [6]. Alopecia (baldness), a dermatological disorder is a common problem in cosmetics as well as primary health practice. It is common throughout the world and has been estimated to affect between 0.2 and 2% of the world population[5].

HERBAL FORMULATIONS:- There are plenty of hair tonics available in the market these days for hair care. However, the commercially available products are expensive and may pose certain kinds of side effects. Therefore natural products should be used to treat hair fall. In the whole world there is turn to return towards the use of herbal products and to adopt more natural way of life[16]. There is a great demand for herbal cosmetics. Herbal formulations have always attracted considerable attention because of their prominent activity when compared to synthetic drugs. Chemical and synthetic Products cause human health hazard with several side effects leading to numerous disorders.

Herbal hair oils have always attracted considerable attention, when compared to synthetic drugs. They are used for the prevention and treatment of hair fall or other Ailments & aggression of hair [3]. They also promote the luxurious growth of hair. Hair oil containing herbal drugs are used as hair tonic. These are basically the extracts of medicinal plant in an oil base. A few herbs have been employed for hair treatment like Musk root, Amla,Henna, Methi, Lemon, Tulsi, Brahmi, Reetha, Hibiscus root, Mahabhringraj, Jantamas [16].

6.2 NEED FOR THE STUDY :

Alopecia is universal problem, having affected both sexes of all races to different extents for as long as mankind has existed. It has been suggested that alopecia could have an adverse effect on physiological life and self esteem between both the genders. Alopecia
