DC Meeting/USCGA Site Visit Summary
The Defense Task Force on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies held its fifth meeting/site visit 10 – 12 January 2005 at the Holiday Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. Additionally, the Co-Chairs along with supporting staff members visited the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) on 10 January.
The purpose of the Task Force meeting was to review data obtained from the Service Academies and received presentations from noted professionals in the areas of victims’ services, support, and training and education.
The site visit to the USCGA provided the opportunity for the Co- Chairs to meet in person with Academy officials and cadets to gather information on the efforts made and lessons learned in the area of sexual harassment/ sexual assault prevention and response. The visit also gave the co-chairs an overall view of the culture and climate at the Academy.
DC Meeting/ USCGA Site Visit Agenda
The following agenda delineates the activities of the Task Force during the DC Meeting/ USCGA site visit, 10 – 12 January 2005:
Day 1, Monday, 10 Jan 2005
o Administrative Announcements o “As Briefed” Presentation: What the Academies claim to have in place. Information gathered from the data call submitted by the schools. o “As Is” Presentation: What the Task Force has determined currently exists at the Academies. Information gathered from the work done over the past four months (i.e. site visits, focus groups and discussion panels, etc). o Subject Matter Expert Presentations: Task Force received educational presentations from noted professionals in areas of victim’s right/advocacy; training, prevention, and awareness; and best practices relating to procedures for handling incidents of sexual assault. Presenters were:
. Dr. Veronique Valliere: Licensed psychologist with 17 years experience working individual and group treatment for violent offenders and their victims. . Gail Stern and Christian Murphy: Creators of the sexual assault prevention program, “Sex Signals”. . Monika Johnson-Hoster: Director, North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Abuse . Anne Munch: Seasoned attorney with 18 years’ experience dedicated to working for victims of violent crimes, with emphasis on domestic violence and sexual assault. Acknowledged national expert in providing training and consulting services to local, state and high-level U.S. military law enforcement officials, prosecutors, victim advocates, and policy makers.
Day 2, Tuesday, 11 Jan 2005
o Administrative Announcements o “To Be” preliminary discussion of future status and what additional fact-finding is needed. o Sub-Groups review of data call from Academies and information/presentations from subject matter experts o Co-Chairs visit Coast Guard Academy
