GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Sophomores - today , November 14, is the deadline to apply for HOBY (the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar). Open to all 10th graders, HOBY motivates and develops future student leaders, preparing them for positions in their schools and communities. While attending this all-expense paid 3-day seminar, (to be held on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona on June 22-24, 2018) students are introduced to distinguished community leaders from various sectors of business, technology, education, government, etc. Pick up an application from Mrs. Mulvoy in the Administration Office. Applications must be returned by 4:00 pm.

 To all Academy students: Please join us in Ms. Choi’s classroom, 5208, after school on Wednesday, November 15, for our monthly academy movie. This month’s movie is ‘Supersize Me’. Refreshments will be provided so be on time.  To All Students: Please come support the Academy at Baja Fresh on Wednesday, November 15, for our monthly fundraiser at Baja Fresh from 5:00-9:00pm. Please pick up flyer in 2205 and remember to turn in your receipt so the Academy can get credit.

 Baseball Tryouts – Thursday, November 16, 5:00pm, Stengel Field. This tryout is for all Frosh and any new players that are 10th-12th graders. Wear your baseball gear.

 Blood Drive - Everyone 17 years and older: the Blood Drive is on Thursday, November 16 from 7:30am-12:30pm. One person’s donation save three lives. Come and pick up an application in the ASB room (1101). Every application requires a parent signature, regardless of donor’s age. Breakfast and snacks will be provided. Applications are due Wednesday, November 15.

 To All Students: Please join us for Jamba Juice on the rally platform on Thursday, November 16 at lunch, hosted by the Academy of Science and Medicine.

 Hike on downstairs to the Underground Theater and help celebrate National Take-A-Hike Day at our next ComedySportz match on Friday, November 17 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults. This match is TD! Watch it!

 Bilingual Competency Award: There will be a meeting for Juniors and Seniors regarding the criteria for receiving the Bilingual Competency Award at graduation and for taking the District Bilingual Competency Exam. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 3:10pm, in the Career Center with Ms. Mooser. It’s your responsibility to find out if you are eligible and it’s your responsibility to sign up for the award. Please attend the meeting and don’t miss the deadlines!

CLUBS

 Students who would be interested in learning more about tobacco, e-cigarettes and hookah smoking and how it affects your health, there is a TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention and Education) program meeting every Tuesday lunch in room 1106. All are welcome, pizza provided.

 Join Operation Smile for a meeting during lunch this Wednesday, November 15, in Ms. Choi’s room 5208. We will be finalizing t-shirt sales and discussing about our upcoming bake sale.

 Beatboxing Club is open to all people. Come down to room 5208 with a lunch, a friend and a big water bottle on Thursday, November 16. No experience needed.

COUNSELOR CORNER

 Seniors interested in part time employment: Color Me Mine in Montrose is looking to hire CV high school seniors in their studio. Students must be at least 17 years old to apply. If you are interested, contact Ms. Gaya Garibyan at the store.

 → Army reps will be in the Counseling Office every Monday during lunch time. → Marine reps will be in the Counseling Office 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month, during lunch time.

 Attention Seniors applying to schools via Common App, SendEdu, or Coalition App: Please remember that you need to complete and submit the Letter of Recommendation packet to the Registrar and your Counselor three weeks prior to the college deadline and no later than Thursday, November 16, for all December and January deadlines.

 Attention students applying to Cal State LA for Fall 2018 The Cal State LA Office of Admissions and Recruitment invites you to attend one of their Cal State Apply Application Clinics: Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. These application clinics are open to all students applying to Cal State LA for Fall 2018. Don’t forget to bring your unofficial transcript(s)! Space in the computer lab is limited, so please bring your laptop/tablet if you can. RSVP at least 1 week prior to the clinic you are attending.  Attention all: Do you want to earn additional credits towards graduation? Are you interested in pursuing a career right after high school? If so, you might want to consider taking an After- School Career/Technical Education (CTE) Course. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Rvsd. Nov. 9, 2017

The NSA (National Security Agency) is again offering the Stokes Educational Scholarship. This award is open to all high school seniors who plan to major in computer Science or Computer/Electrical Engineering in college (minority students are encouraged to apply). The award pays tuition and fees up to $30,000 per year plus a year-round salary while attending college. Students may visit https://www.intelligencecareers.gov for application instructions. Hurry deadline is Nov. 15, 2017 Wells Fargo Scholarship Program for People with Disabilities – In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Wells Fargo has committed $1 million over the next 4 years to help people with disabilities obtain the education or training necessary to succeed in the career path of their choice. Sixt Scholars Program – Sixt Rent-A-Car is pleased to offer 5 high school seniors graduating in 2018 the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship to continue their education in college. Edison Scholars Program – awarding $40,000 (4-year) scholarships to students majoring in the STEM fields: computer & information systems, engineering, engineering technology, management information systems, mathematics, natural resources and conservation or physical sciences. California Association of Educational Office Professionals (CAEOP) is offer a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior continuing his/her education at an accredited college/university in the fall. Student must have a min. 2.0 GPA, be a resident of California and seeking to continue his/her education in the field of business administration or education. Award is also based on financial need, scholastic achievement, initiative and extracurricular activities. Application information is available at www.caeop.org and deadline is Dec. 11, 2017

Burger King Scholars Program – awards scholarship to help graduating seniors offset the cost of attending college. Recipients are selected based on their GPA (min. 2.0), work experience, extracurricular activities and/or community service. AXA Achievement Scholarship Fund – provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors. Awards range from $2500 - $25,000 and are granted to seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college/university for the 2017-18 academic year. Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Program – seeks to honor student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, in their school and within their communities. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes embody good sportsmanship, strong moral character, display academic excellence and are confident and enthusiast leaders. Applicants must be current high school seniors who will be entering a 4-yr college in the Fall of 2018, be a member on a high school sports team or be involved in after- school sports (e.g. intramural, martial arts, etc.), have a min. 3.0 GPA and be a US citizen or permanent legal resident. APIASF (Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund) provides scholarships to underserved AAPI students who will be enrolling in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall. Students must have a min. 2.7 GPA and apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA. Additional information and application are available at https://www.apiasf.org/scholarships. Deadline-January, 2018

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is a national program that awards college scholarships to high school seniors who embody the characteristics of President Ronald Reagan at their school, in the community, in the workplace and at home. Applicants must demonstrate the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship; strong academic performance (min. 3.0 GPA), and plans to enroll full-time at an accredited 4-year college/university. The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award – The Helen Diller Family Foundation sponsors this scholarship to support Jewish teen leaders and inspire future generations of strong Jewish leaders in the global community. The award provides $36,000 to each of 15 recipients so that they may use it to further their community service project or education. Information and application are available at www.dillerteanawards.org and deadline is Jan. 8, 2018.

Washington Crossing Foundation – awarding scholarships ranging from $500 - $5000 to graduating seniors who are planning careers in government service (local, state or federal). Check out organization’s website – www.gwcf.org for information (official rules, requirements, procedures and downloadable application). Award also based on one-page essay stating why he/she plans a career in government service. Deadline is Jan. 15, 2018.

Professional Business Women of California (PBWC) - will be awarding academic scholarships to several high school seniors who are women and California residents. A personal essay is required as part of the application. Completed scholarship application and supporting documentation must be submitted electronically by Jan. 31, 2018. Union Plus Scholarship Program – is offering grants ranging from $500 - $4000 to assist union members and their children to attend college. Applicants are evaluated based on academic ability (min. 3.0 GPA), social awareness, financial need and content of essay. California State PTA offers scholarship awards of $750 each to acknowledge the achievements of high school seniors for volunteer service in school and community. Seniors must be members of their school’s PTA/PTSA unit in good standing. Scholarships can be used for study at any accredited 2-yr or 4-yr college, or trade/technical school. The Jackie Robinson Foundation – provides scholarships to disadvantaged minority high school students, planning to attend an accredited 4-yr college/university. Students should also demonstrate leadership potential, dedication to community service and financial need. Application available at www.jackierobinson.org. Deadline-Feb. 1, 2018

Mothers of Multiples Clubs, Inc. – is offering scholarships to graduating multiple birth students (twins, triplets or higher). Students must be planning to attend a college/ university or trade/vocational school in the fall. Award based on financial need, academic achievement, educational background and extracurricular activities. 2018 Beverage Industry College Scholarship Program – offers 1-year, non-recurring scholarships ranging from $2500-$5000. Qualified applicants must be graduating seniors attending a 4-year college in the fall and have a parent or grandparent who are employed with a company or individual holding a valid CA liquor/beer/wine license (i.e. hotels, restaurants, wholesale grocery/retail/drug stores, convenience stores, airlines, etc.). Application is available at www.christermon.com and deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2018

Sons of Italy Western Foundation – announces the availability of academic and athletic scholarships for graduating seniors in the Class of 2018. Awards are open to students who are wholly or partially of Italian descent and will be enrolling in an accredited trade school, college, university or community college in the Fall. Applications are available at www.osiaca.org/scholarship. Deadline-March 1, 2018

Scholarship for Juniors: Calvin Coolidge Scholars Program – is offering a full-ride, merit scholarship (covers tuition, room, board and expenses) for 4 years of undergraduate study at ANY accredited college or university in the U.S. The awards are for students planning to pursue ANY academic discipline of study. Students apply for the Coolidge scholarship during their junior year of high school. The scholarship application and additional information can be accessed online at www.coolidgeschohlars.org and must be submitted by Jan. 24, 2018.

Essay Contests (grades 9-12) 2017-18 Profiles in Courage Essay Contest – This essay contest challenges students to write an original and creative essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kenney in his book “Profiles in Courage.” Contest is open to all U.S. high school students in grades 9-12. Essay can be no more than 1000 words but must be min. 700 words. Information and essay rules are available at https://jfklibrary.org/Education/Profile-in-Courage-Essay-Contest and deadline to submit is Jan. 4. 2018. 2018 AG Day Essay and Video Contest – sponsored by the Agriculture Council of America (ACA). This year’s theme – “How Will Agriculture Feed the World?” The ACA encourages students to describe how agriculture impacts their daily life and how it will feed the world with the growing population. Contest is open to all U.S. high school students in grades 9-12. Essay contest is divided into two categories – written essay and video essay. Contestants are eligible to submit only one written OR one video essay. Additional information, submission rules and essay guidelines are available at https://www.agday.org/essay-contest and deadline to submit is Jan. 31, 2018

STEM Program (grades 9-12) THINK Scholars Program @ MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) – The THINK scholars program is an educational outreach initiative that promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics by supporting and funding projects developed by high school students. The program is run by a team of undergraduates at MIT and is open to all high school students residing in the United States. Students apply to the program by submitting a proposal for any novel science, technology or engineering idea. After judging of the proposals submitted, six (6) students will be chosen as finalists. Finalists receive:  an all-expense paid trip to MIT

 attendance to XFair (MIT’s spring tech symposium)

 networking opportunities with MIT professors and XFair companies

 up to $1000 to build their project

 project mentorship from MIT students
