Welcome to Geometry! Ms. Helmuth Room 212 [email protected]

What is Geometry? The word "geometry" (geo + metry) means "earth + to measure.” Geometry studies the measurement of and the relationships between figures in space and has countless applications to our world. During this course, students will apply inductive and deductive reasoning to angles, lines, planes, polygons, and circles. In addition, students will study perimeters, areas, volumes, planes, and transformations.

What should you expect?  An opening activity and instructions posted at the front of the room when you enter  Time to practice and ask questions in class  Daily homework  A quiz and test every chapter  Lessons and common assessments that have been developed collaboratively using best practice as a guide and Indiana State Standards as a framework. Students will complete a formative assessment approximately halfway through the semester and a final summative exam at the end of each semester. The formative assessment is designed primarily to inform instruction, giving the teacher a tool to measure the student's understanding of essential outcomes of the course content. The final exam is summative in nature (covering the entire semester) and is worth 15% of the student's overall grade.  Course content: Semester One Semester Two CH 1 - Points, Lines, Planes & Angles CH 7 - Proportions & Similarity CH 2 - Reasoning & Proof CH 8 - Right Triangle & Trigonometry CH 3 - Parallel & Perpendicular Lines CH 9 - Areas of Polygons & Circles CH 4 - Congruent Triangles CH 10 - Surface Area & Volume CH 5 - Relationships in Triangles CH 11 - Circles CH 6 - Quadrilaterals CH 12 - Transformations

 Essential Outcomes: 1. Inductive reasoning and proving the validity of conditional statements 2. Segment relationships 3. Types of angles and angle pair relationships 4. Ways to prove congruency of triangles (SAS, SSS, ASA, AAS, HL, CPCTC) 5. Right triangle relationships (30-60-90, 45-45-90, geometric mean, etc.) 6. Quadrilateral family and special features 7. Proportions and similarities of figures 8. Circle relationships (formed by radii, arcs, secants, tangents, and chords) 9. Area of 2-dimensional polygons and circles 10. Surface area and volume of 3-dimensional solids

What do I expect from students? Materials  Textbook  Binder/notebook with loose-leaf paper for organizing notes/worksheets/assignments.  Calculator: TI-30X IIS (or TI 83+ or TI 84+) *Graphing calculators are allowed but not required for Geometry  Pencil with eraser Respect  Respect your classmates: Come prepared, help each other when appropriate, and make sure that your words and actions contribute to a positive learning environment.  Respect me: Participate positively in the class activities that I have prepared to help you learn.  Respect yourself: Do your best in order to give yourself the best chance at success. Homework  Take pride in what you turn in! It should be neat, readable, and professional.  Put your name and class period at the top right corner.  Always use pencil.  I will check homework every day, checking all problems for completion and choosing a few problems to check for accuracy.  ALWAYS SHOW YOUR WORK!  Late homework: You have until school starts the following morning to turn in any homework without penalty. After that, late homework will be accepted up until the day of the unit test but will automatically receive a 20% penalty unless I specifically give you extra time.

Attendance  Make an effort to come to school every day--you need to be here to learn!  Be on time--your classmates and I are counting on you being here prepared and ready to go!  If you are absent: o It is your responsibility to figure out what you missed. Check the class website, ask a friend, or talk to me if you have questions. o For excused absences, you get one school day for each day you were absent to turn in the homework. o If you miss a quiz or test, you will take it the first day you return unless other arrangements are made with me. o Please take advantage of online materials and khanacademy.org to catch up on missed topics.

Restroom/Locker Passes Each student will receive 3 passes per semester that may be used with teacher permission to go to the restroom or locker.

Grades I follow CHS Math Department standards: Homework: 15% Quizzes: 25% Tests: 60% *Semester grade = 85% (18-week grade) + 15% (final exam)

Asking Questions If you don't understand, please ask! Pretending that you understand when you don't only puts you farther behind. I am happy to help...see my availability below.

Help  Math Department Help Sessions (before and after school)  Khanacademy.org (video lessons explaining nearly every topic)  Rose-Hulman Help Line (7pm - 10pm Sunday--Thursday) 1-877-ASK-ROSE or www.askrose.org  I am available for help the following times: - Before school (7:30-7:45) most days except Wednesdays - After school (3:00-3:30) most days - Evenings (5:00-8:00) by email ([email protected])
