Student Achievement Team Minutes, January 22, 2007 PSU

Dr. Alan Utter was introduced and welcomed as the faculty representative from the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Introductions all around.

Announcements:  AP&P’s deferral of SAT’s recommendations re: changes to forgiveness policies to their Feb. meeting in order to allow more time for feedback, especially from students;  Retention workshop for Student Development on Friday could use some facilitators;  Noel-Levitz webinar on 3 case-studies of early intervention including Martha representing ASU;  Academic initiatives in residence life activities (letters, liaisons, “Declare Yosef”;  Faculty Evaluation Task Force – surveying faculty this Spring re: their work life and related issues with goal to align rewards and compensations with how faculty actually work, followed by focus groups and, eventually, a set of recommendations. This task force and the Strategic Planning subgroup looking at faculty evaluation and development have subtly different charges, with the Task Force not intending to suggest changes in the way faculty work while the Strategic Planning subgroup may be looking at changing the nature of how faculty work.  GA visit this Friday for a look at our retention practices;  University on NC Forum on Undergraduate Education will occur on our campus 5/17 – 18 for Senior Administrators and program people.

The rest of the meeting was devoted to providing direction to the work groups.

The Best Practices group met with the Research group looking at cohorts, the F-study, measuring the cumulative effect of numerous small things, faculty development, APRs, advisor intervention with students earning even one F, conduct issues correlating with GPA (Judy now includes in sanctioning a requirement to meet with academic advisor).

Our website could contain a list of such practices as early interventions to promote student success; the content for the website piece for parents could come from the Best Practices group, as well. Directions/ideas for work teams: Best Practices –  Parental involvement – positive and interactive;  Male Development course (Wes’ proposal, Judy’s mini-course “Paths”)  Sophomore Year  Recognition/Awards/Rewards for best practices  Recruit back strategy (summer bridge?)  Intrusive advising (holds?) for students who earn even one F

Research –  Fine tuning APRs (Jeff’s proposal)  Survey of students who stop/drop out  Declaration study  Development of an Assessment Agenda, including process for regular student feedback

Communication –  Coordination information of things going on now but not widely known or part of SAT  Communicating coherently such information to wide campus audience  Develop document on how faculty do their work affects student achievement
