1 Frequently Asked Questions about Fairway Living

What is the Fairway?  It is a building that was most recently used as a motel, located just over a mile from campus on Route 11. There are 12, double occupancy rooms with private baths.

What are the rooms like?  There are several different floor plans. All include a private bath, closet, and wall-mounted television

 Lots of natural light, with two windows facing the front and one facing the back

Are the policies for the Fairway the same?  Yes. The Code of Community Responsibility and all college policies will be applicable to Fairway residents. This includes the pet and fire safety policies. Because the building is in close proximity to our neighbors, residents’ sensitivity to quiet and courtesy hours will be of particular importance. As with apartment style living, students on Housing Contract probation will not be permitted to apply to live at the Fairway.

What are the benefits to living at the Fairway?  Small, quiet environment with fellow upper-class students (total of approximately 24 residents)

 Ideal location for students who will be completing a clinical, internship, or student teaching because of access to easy parking

 A double room with a private bath

 Direct access to your room

 Wireless, local phone, cable (wall mounted TV in each room)

 Coin operated laundry on site

What about meals?  Fairway residents will be considered “on campus” students and will be on the college board plan

 A small kitchen area may be available for the occasional preparation of meals

What about parking?  Parking available on site; Fee for on-campus parking waived (student will only be responsible for minimal shipping and handling cost of decal)

 Easy access directly to your room from the adjacent parking area

Additional perks:  Residential Education staff member on the premises to serve as a resource and liaison to campus

 Same price as a double room on campus

2  Residents will be permitted to move in on September 7 and stay through commencement in May

 Residents will be able to stay in their rooms during Thanksgiving, Spring, and January breaks

 Residents will only need to vacate their room during the holiday shutdown period (two weeks in late December/early January)

What will happen if one roommate chooses not to return to campus housing in the fall?  The remaining roommate will either be assigned another upper class roommate, OR will be reassigned to another space on campus at the discretion of Residential Education.

Do I need to complete the Alternative Housing Preferences Form?  Yes, all students must fill out the form in case we need to make a reassignment

If I am studying abroad in the fall of 2009 semester, am I still eligible for a room at the Fairway?  You would be eligible to move into any openings that become available at the end of first semester

 Prior to assignment at the Fairway, you will be asked to apply for this opportunity for independent living

Is there an appeal process if we do not get selected for a room at the Fairway?  No, there is no appeal process and all decisions are final

If I am not selected to live at the Fairway, am I still eligible to apply for an on-campus apartment in Rooke or London house  Yes, the apartment selection process will be held after the Fairway selection process.

How will Fairway assignments be made? Is preference given to juniors and seniors?  Members of the selection committee will evaluate the information made available through the applications, the interviews and references. They will use this information to assess the readiness of each applicant.

 In cases where all other factors are equal, preference will be given to upperclassmen.

For each individual, they will look for this readiness to be demonstrated by:  A healthy balance between social interactions and academics

o GPA

o Involvement on campus and in the community

o References (we just need contact information, written references are not necessary)

 Maturity and Responsibility

o Thoughtfulness of answers – applicants indicate an understanding of the challenges and responsibilities, as well as the benefits, of living independently

o Reflection about past and current residence hall living, and how these experiences will contribute to their success in living independently

3 o Evidence that the roommates have a common understanding of what it will be like to live with each other in this independent environment

o History of interactions with Citizenship Education, Campus Safety and Residential Education (Have you expressed your concerns appropriately, is there a pattern of behavior or a single event, learned from experiences, complied with sanctions and/or the reasonable request of a college official?)

Are there additional criteria for Fairway applicants?  Yes, the selection committee will be looking for residents with the ability to live in a less supervised environment and demonstrated sensitivity to quiet/courtesy hours

 Each resident will be asked to sign a Fairway lease agreement in addition to the standard Room and Board contract
