Friday, October 24th:

 Journal #9: Discuss violence in local schools. How is education affected?  Memorizations presented- more to come next week!  Homework submitted: "To be or not to be" parodies- 10 pts extra credit for reading yours aloud!  Handed back Acts I and II quiz- 2A went over answers, in 1A we'll go over them on Tuesday  Group work: Act out Act III, scene 2 by paraphrasing. When I ring the bell, be able to stop and explain what your character is thinking. WE WILL PRESENT THESE ON TUESDAY. Be ready for your character. *If you were absent, write a modern-language script for this scene to submit to me.  Homework: Be ready to present your scene on Tuesday. Finish reading Act III, answer questions and fill out the quote sheet.  ***PERHAPS THE VIDEO BELOW WILL GIVE YOU SOME HINTS ABOUT HOW TO ACT OUT ACT III, SCENE 2! GOOD LUCK!

Wednesday, October 22nd:

 No journal  Memorizations presented  Read Act III, scene 1 together  Handouts on "To be or not to be": To be Soliloquy exercise.doc  After doing the above exercise, we paraphrased the soliloquy, sentence by sentence.  Examples of parodies of "To be...": parodies of to be or not to be.doc  Homework: Write your own parody of the soliloquy (Type it on here- Parody assessment.doc)/ Read Act III, scene 2 and do questions and quotes for scenes 1 and 2.  ********1A: FEDERAL CARDS ON FRIDAY! (after Act I).PPT  Read Act II, scene 1- discussed and answered handout questions  Homework: Read Act II, scene 2/ complete quotes and questions/ Quiz Monday on Acts I and II/ come prepared with questions to ask before the quiz  1A- on your wiki under your uploaded college essay (#1) write 2 paragraphs: 1- reflection on your college essay based on the rubric and comments 2- one paragraph labeled "Plan for Improvement" that discusses what you will be doing this year to improve your writing

Tuesday, October 14th:

 Journal #7: We watched Act I of the Zefirelli version of Hamlet (the Mel Gibson one). Discuss the differences between the movie and the text, and explain how these differences affect your understanding of the play.  Mini reading-check quiz for Act I. You do not have to make this up- it was for extra credit.  Discussion of Act I- went over questions for scenes 4 and 5.  Reviewed memorization assignment due date/ looked at the rubric for the assignment.  College essay #2: Continued to self edit....looked for being verbs (eliminate them), appropriate transitions, a hook, reference to the hook in the conclusion, and it, that, and things (change them).  Homework: Final college essay #2 due Thursday...bring all 3 drafts and the self-editing assignment.  ****FIELD TRIP MONEY DUE THURSDAY! !!!!

Friday, October 10th:

 Journal #6: Like Laertes, what advice have you received about college?  Performed skits for Act I, scene 2/ graded (if you were absent, you need to turn your script into me where you wrote the stage directions, etc..)  Handout: Polonius' speech to Laertes ( PoloniusAdvicenew.pdf). Highlight all the pieces of advice on this sheet and paraphrase each one into modern English  Discuss Act I, scene 2-3  Handed out permisson slips to go see Hamlet on November 18th- bring money by October 16th  Homework: Read Act I, scenes 4 and 5/ answer question/ identify quotes...bring your essay back on Tuesday...due date for final college essay has been changed to Thursday, October 16th  WRITING WORKSHOP ON MONDAY! Wednesday, October 8th:

 No journal  Homework checks: Act I, scene 2 questions, college essay rough draft  Quiz: Shakespeare notes and dramatic terms  Reviewed reading from Act I, scene 2  Handouts: quote sheet (see make-up folder), paideia info ( Hamlet Paideia guidelines.doc), memorization project ( Memorization.doc), Act I, scene 2 script ( Act I, scene 2 lines for practice.doc)  Group work: Use the script above to act out a scene with your group. You must add stage directions, emotional details, and you can take out any lines that are unnecessary to the plot. If you were absent, turn in to me a copy of the script with your notes. Groups will perform the scenes on Friday.  College essay self edit: Reshaping and Revising Your Zero.doc. Follow the steps on this handout to do a first edit of your essay.  Homework: Read Act I, scene 3 and complete the questions/ Finish the self-edit sheet and create a 2nd draft for your essay (due Friday)

 Journal #4: Discuss your past experiences with Shakespeare.  Handouts: Dramatic terms Dramatic Terms blank.doc Proofreading Marks Proofreader's marks.doc Hamlet introductory packet (check the make-up binder in class)  Passed back college essays- ask questions and look over proofreading marks  Group work: Each group gets a packet of sample essays to look at and evaluate. As a group, students turn in their comments, list of favorite to least favorite, and a summary of what they've learned about writing essays.  Homework: 1A and 2A- define vocabulary words  2A only: Upload your college essay to your 12th grade wiki page; write a 1- paragraph reflection of your piece; write a 2-paragraph "Plan for Improvement" about what you plan to do to improve your writing this year.  ***Both classes: the second college essay rough draft will be due next Wednesday- Heads up!

Eliot's "The Hollow Men" in your workbook (can also be found online)- Complete the handout from class that will direct you about its importance/ Test Tuesday on the entire novel plus its relation to this poem/ Your essay will be "Is Conrad a racist?" Be able to answer and defend. You will be able to use your text.

 I checked the first draft of your college essays in class for a grade today  We took notes on a list of do's and don'ts ( College Dos and Don'ts.doc)  For homework, work on a second draft of your essay based on these lists and the rubric you were provided  You may also want to continue researching for your newsletter: you want to be able to start writing your articles when you enter class on Wednesday  Have all materials on Wednesday  Meet in the classroom Wednesday

 Books were handed out today; bring them on Monday if you received one~  Project sheets for the British overview project were given out- see below  Newsletter Instructions.doc  Students are to choose one college essay topic and type a 1.5-2 page (double- spaced) first draft for me by Monday. Please identify the topic on the piece. Ignore length requirements from the colleges at this point.  Meet in the library on Monday.
