A3ii) Statement of Responsibility

A3.2 Statement of Responsibility Last updated: Feb 2010

 Transcribe statements of responsibility appearing prominently in the item in the form in which they appear on the chief sources of information

 do not include titles, professions etc

 separate the names with a comma space unless other wording is included on the chief source (eg 'and') eg James Wood, J. C. McGavin

 separate initials with a full stop space C. H. eg J. C. McGavin

 do not use capitals for editor, edited by etc even if capitals are used on the title page

eg edited by Alan Winter and Felicity Jones

 If the information is taken from a source other than the chief sources of information, enclose it in square brackets

 where the names appear as authors but are obviously editors indicate this in square brackets (sometimes it is useful to check LocatorPlus or other catalogues to confirm this) eg [edited by] Simon Hayes [editors] C. H. Grey, J. M. Buchanan, John Miles NB: in the Names field these should also be designated as Editors

 If the statement of responsibility precedes the title, move it to its required position unless it is an integral part of the title eg Conference proceedings : e-portfolios… / Higher Education Academy

 Additional notable information such as the author of the foreword, illustrator etc may be entered in the Statement of resp. field, separated from the authors/editors by a semi-colon space. These names may or may not be added in the Names field also as preferred eg Jo May, Kathleen Hughes; foreword by Patricia Hewitt; illustrations Gary Richardson

 If the statement of responsibility names more than three persons or corporate bodies performing the same function or with the same degree of responsibility, only put the first of each group and indicate the omission with …[et al] no full stop (See AACR 1.1F for further information) eg James Wood …[et al] NB: only this one goes in the Names field also  Where an original author’s name has become integral to the title only the current editors’ names appearing on the chief source of information should be entered in the statement of responsibility field (not the original author/s)

eg Title: Gray's anatomy Subtitle: the anatomical basis of clinical practice Statement of responsibility: editor -in-chief Susan Standring

eg Title: Harrison's endocrinology Statement of responsibility: editor Larry J. Jameson NB: original authors can be added into the Names field if wished, with designation of Other

 If no statement of responsibility appears prominently, do not construct one. Put in a Note any information you think useful
