A new and exciting role in Somerset’s Climate Emergency team has become available for the right person. Working on behalf of all the councils in Somerset you will be responsible for coordinating the implementation and delivery of an innovative new Climate Strategy for Somerset. The Climate crisis is the defining issue of our generation and is a priority for the five councils in Somerset The five Local Authorities in Somerset (Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West and Taunton District Council and South Somerset District Council) have each declared or recognised Climate Emergencies and have committed to collaborate in the development of a strategy to identify ways in which the county of Somerset can become carbon neutral by 2030. The Climate Emergency team is part of the Community Infrastructure department within Somerset County Council and employs a small team of people who are responsible for coordinating the Climate Emergency Strategy work of the five councils. About the job You will be responsible for ensuring that there is an evidence-based understanding of the changes required for Somerset to become carbon neutral, including effective methods of measurement, appropriate and robust data sources and baselining. You will ensure effective working, lines of communication and collaboration between the respective workstreams to maximise efficiency, effectiveness, seek economies of scale and risks are minimised. About you We are looking for an experienced programme manager who has worked in a relevant role including having led and delivered major multi-disciplinary, multi-agency programmes of work. You will work 21.6 hours (3 days) per week on a fixed term contract for 12 months. The Education Safeguarding Service works with schools and families to ensure every child of statutory school age in Somerset accesses their full educational entitlement. This is achieved by taking action where necessary to secure regular attendance at school or monitoring and challenging Elective Home Education where necessary. This work supports all children in Somerset to be safe and to achieve to 3 their full potential. The Education Safeguarding Service also have responsibility for tracking children missing from education and providing a licensing service for children in entertainment and chaperones. About the job You would be part of a busy team of Education Safeguarding Officers. The role would include holding a caseload and an allocation of schools, advising and supporting schools, parents and students to find solutions to resolve complex cases. Using specialist knowledge, you will build, maintain and develop good working relationships with attendance leads, Head Teachers, and other services/professionals concerned with the welfare and education of children. You will convene and chair meetings with parent/carers, pupils and schools and lead criminal investigations using statutory powers. Where appropriate you will prepare, on behalf of the Local Authority, prosecution cases in relation to non-school attendance. In addition, you will consider and use, appropriate statutory functions such as Penalty Notices to support the work of promoting school attendance. About you Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing needs of the service is a necessary part of the role, making a positive and committed attitude a necessity. You should have an understanding of national and local policy relating to safeguarding children. You will have experience of designing, delivering, commissioning and evaluating a range of training programmes and will provide expert support to ensure that all Somerset Safeguarding Children Partnership safeguarding training programmes meet national and local standards. You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of training needs analysis, and a teaching/training qualification would be advantageous. You will have the ability to manage time effectively and work to deadlines to deliver a high-quality training offer, which covers a diverse range of safeguarding subjects, to staff working at a range of levels, including senior staff. The role will also include revenue generation and budget management. You will need high quality interpersonal skills and confidence to communicate positively (day-to-day, and through the medium of training) at all levels within the partnership and with
