JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF POST: Head of Retail

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Chief Executive

HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week

JOB PURPOSE: To lead, develop and manage all retail and trading activity at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, meeting yearly profit targets enabling Bluebell Wood to have sufficient financial resources to run effectively whilst enhancing its public image and reputation.

To lead and implement the Bluebell Wood retail strategy, ensuring that we have the appropriate number of retail outlets in appropriate locations throughout our area of operation and that all shops run to the relevant standards.

To be responsible for managing the retail team, ensuring that we have appropriate staffing in place, including back up cover for sickness, training and holidays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develop and maintain a retail strategy for the charity to achieve agreed income targets. 2. Provide professional leadership and direction to all members of the retail team. 3. Provide relevant and timely reports to the CEO, retail committee, trustees and SMT as required. 4. Contribute to the Bluebell Wood leadership team.

KEY TASKS:

5. Develop and maintain networks and contacts to acquire donated stock for the retail function. 6. Identify and develop any potential new retail outlets in line with budget and procurement policies. 7. Recruit, train and manage the team of shop managers, drivers and volunteers for the retail chain. 8. Develop a range of bespoke and bought in merchandise for sale throughout the charity to the agreed budget and in line with procurement policy. 9. Ensure all retail activity complies with relevant laws, sector best practise and BBW policies. 10. Develop Trading Company Business Plans and yearly income and expenditure budgets in line with organisation strategy and budget. 11. Work in collaboration with the Fundraising department to develop and oversee a clear process for distributing stock to shops and fundraisers. 12. Work in collaboration with the Fundraising department to ensure a high standard of display and product choice is maintained where Bluebell Wood is represented at community and corporate events. 13. Have overall responsibility for the electronic till system, and ensure Gift Aid is both promoted and maintained on a continual basis. 14. Provide accurate and timely data and sales reporting for the team of shops. 15. Form part of the Bluebell Wood Leadership Team. 16. Manage staff, carrying out regular supervisions and appraisals in line with BBW policy. 17. Monitor and control expenditure from the budget and sign off all retail invoices. 18. Ensure that there are systems and channels in place to facilitate and promote effective communication within the retail team and between the retail team and the wider BBW team. 19. Work with other teams, especially fundraising, volunteering and marketing to ensure that key teams and staff work together effectively to make our shops successful. 20. Develop and manage other sales channels including eBay and pop up shops. 21. Ensure that all retail premises are maintained to the highest standards. 22. Work with the Facilities Manager to ensure compliance with fire and health and safety legislation and other legislation that applies across the team. 23. Promote a culture of cross team working, ensuring that the retail team participate in working groups, cross team groups and short term projects.
