Employment Terms: This job is a full time, benefited, FLSA non-exempt position in the Administrative Services Division that reports to the Grounds Manager.

Salary: Targeted salary is commensurate with education and experience not to exceed the budgeted amount of $32,500.00 per year.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of training and experience which would have enabled the applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Associate Degree or Diploma in Horticulture. Ability to follow both written and oral instruction quickly and accurately. 1-2 years’ experience in a production landscape maintenance/installation environment. Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and installing irrigation systems. Experience with troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining landscape maintenance equipment. Ability to use word processing, email, spreadsheets and internet resources to enhance communication, recordkeeping and research. 1-2 years’ experience in a progressively responsible role in a production landscape maintenance/installation environment.

Job Description: Under general supervision, maintains the campus grounds in an attractive and orderly condition by trimming lawns, removing leaves and debris, planting seasonal color and performing other related tasks. Adjusts and services grounds equipment as required. May supervise work study students and unskilled landscape labor.

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards: 1. Operates power mowing, tilling and trimming equipment to cut grass, edge walks, flower beds, curbs, etc. in accordance with the schedule provided by supervisor. 1. Works in accordance with the maintenance schedule as provided by the grounds supervisor in the area designated by the current schedule. 2. Operates equipment responsibly and in manner intended while observing conditions. 3. Observes safety rules while operating equipment (i.e., directions of discharge, transport and mowing speeds, yielding to motorized and pedestrian traffic). Wears protective equipment. 4. Informs supervisor and mechanic of equipment problems.

2. Operates heavy, mechanized equipment, such as trucks, tractors, and backhoes for trenching, landscaping, grading, digging, loading, etc. 1. Operates equipment in accordance with strict safety guidelines. 2. Ensures equipment is stored in appropriate and safe location. 3. Reports any equipment problems to supervisor.

3. Rakes, collects and disposes of leaves and refuse from grounds. Clears storm drains and traps of debris. 1. Cleans and disposes of all refuse in assigned areas. 2. Disposes of debris and leaves according to established guidelines.

4. Applies insecticides as directed and by adhering to necessary safety precautions. 1. Mixes and applies insecticides in direct accordance with manufacturer's guidelines. 2. Wears protective clothing/equipment at all times as required by established safety regulations. 3. Informs all appropriate personnel of presence of any dangerous chemicals when applying insecticides. 4. Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of insecticides and chemicals and proper usage.

5. Maintains required records of time spent each day by task category. 1. Submits clear and legible information for each day of work performed 2. Submits required records within prescribed time frames.

6. Cleans and maintains shop. Performs related support functions as requested. 1. Performs routine cleaning of facility/shop to ensure adequate operation at all times. 2. Obtains proper supplies and tools needed for each task and promptly returns unused supplies and tools to appropriate storage areas. 3. Follows appropriate safety procedures including posting signage and setting barricades as needed. 4. Uses chemicals according to manufacturer's specifications and departmental policies. 5. Maintains a safe and effective work/storage area at all times.

7. Maintains all tools and equipment assigned in a secure, clean and orderly manner. 1. Returns all tools and materials to appropriate storage area by end of working day. 2. Ensures all equipment materials are maintained in a safe and clean manner. 3. Selects appropriate tools and equipment for projects at beginning of each work day. 4. Informs supervisor of any problems with tools or equipment.

8. Maintains equipment fluids, performs routine equipment maintenance, troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment problems and makes necessary repairs. 1. Monitors equipment on a regular basis to ensure that correct fluid levels and tire pressures are maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications. 2. Performs routine fluid changes and other maintenance on a regular basis according to the manufacturer’s specifications. 3. Diagnoses problems and repairs equipment in a timely manner. 4. Maintains an inventory of repair parts and reorders necessary parts when needed. 5. Keeps records of repairs made and maintenance performed on designated equipment.

9. Responsible for turf management program. 1. Performs soil tests in designated turf areas on a regular basis. 2. Prepares and administers a fertilizer program based on these soil tests. 3. Procures materials needed in the prepared turf program. ie fertilizers and pesticides 4. Applies pesticides or herbicides if needed to maintain the health of the designated turf. 5. Aerates designated turf on an as needed basis. 6. Monitors water needs of designated turf and adjusts irrigation schedule to meet those needs.

10. Designs and installs new landscape plantings and hardscapes as necessary. 1. Using knowledge of both the design process and plant material, produces an industry standard landscape plan view design for proposed new landscape areas. 2. Using that design projects costs for the proposed landscape. 3. Orders the necessary landscape elements, schedules the installation of the landscape in accordance with the overall campus maintenance schedule and within budget limitations.

11. Designs, installs and maintains irrigation system components. 1. Using knowledge of water flow dynamics, designs irrigations systems for designated areas of the landscape. 2. Installs irrigation systems and components according to industry standards 3. Monitors and maintains elements of the installed irrigations systems to ensure good working conditions, makes repairs as necessary.

12. Provides direction to unskilled labor. 1. Manages the tasks of unskilled labor to ensure that work quality is maintained.

13. Displays a high level of effort and commitment to performing work; operates effectively within the organizational structure; demonstrates trustworthiness and responsible behavior. 1. Demonstrates eagerness to learn and assume responsibility; seeks out and accepts increased responsibility; displays a "can do" approach to work. 2. Shows persistence and seeks alternatives when obstacles arise; seeks alternative solutions; does things before being asked or forced to by events. 3. Works within the system in a resourceful manner to accomplish reasonable work goals; shows flexibility in response to process change and adapts to and accommodates new methods and procedures. 4. Accepts direction and feedback from supervisors and follows through appropriately. 5. Works when scheduled; begins and ends work as expected; calls in according to policy when arriving late for work or when absent; observes provisions of Fair Labor Standards Act; observes policies on break and lunch periods. Uses work time appropriately.

14. Performs other duties as assigned in the fulfillment of the needs, philosophy, and purpose of Gwinnett Technical College.
