Course and Teaching Assistantship Appointment Form 2014-15

Assistantships involve students in faculty teaching or research activities, establish working relationships between faculty and students, and provide mentorship opportunities. The benefits include helping students develop teaching styles and approaches, portfolios, and research skills and interests. A review of this assistantship will be part of the student's yearly academic progress review. The review will be used to determine whether the student's funding may continue, conditional upon satisfactory performance in research work, for another year. Assistantship form submission deadlines: Autumn Quarter: August 25, 2014 Spring Quarter: March 2, 2015 Winter Quarter: November 10, 2014 Summer Quarter: May 18, 2015 Late form submissions may result in the student forfeiting the health subsidy for that quarter and/or a delay in receiving paychecks.

Appointment Types and Responsibilities: . Course Assistant (CA): course planning, grading, and occasional presentations. . Teaching Assistant (TA): has significantly more independence and responsibility than a CA; holds regularly scheduled sections which are listed in the Time Schedule and AXESS, prepares for class sections, holds scheduled office hours. . Teaching Affiliate (TF): has primary charge and responsibility for a course (with mentorship of a faculty member) and is listed as the primary instructor in the Time Schedule and AXESS. One 25% TA or CA can be expected for every 20 students in an eligible course (e.g., enrollment of 30 students yields one 25% CA or TA; enrollment of 40 students yields two 25% CA or TAs). Requests for exceptions for courses that do not meet the enrollment threshold should be directed to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs via an email from the applicable professor.
