GRADING STANDARD : EVALUATION In this class, testing serves two purposes: to help determine grades and to evaluate the progress of students. The oral and written tests you will take evaluate your ability to understand and communicate messages in Italian.

3 There are four traditionally identified communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and structure (grammar) which are basic tools for the acquisition of linguistic competency.

TESTING WILL BE DONE AS FOLLOWS:  Vocabulary test after Preliminare 25 points

 Test on Capitolo 1 50 points (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar) Oral Test 1 (Capitolo 1) ------> 25 points

 Test on Capitolo 2 50 points (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) Oral Test 2 (Capitolo 2) ------> 25 points

 Test on Capitolo 3 50 points (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar,)

 Test on Capitolo 4 50 points (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing) Oral Test 3 (Capitolo 4) ------> 25 points

TEST TOTAL ………………………… 300 points

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY 30 points You will lose 1 point for each absence. You may obtain credit for the missed class by attending another section of the same course, by attend a ½ hour tutoring session. Being late twice counts as 1 absence.

PARTICIPATION 30 points Based on willingness to participate in group and individual interactions in class. HOMEWORK Must be completed in a TIMELY manner to receive full credit WORKBOOK EXERCISES 25 points

4 5 LAB ASSIGNMENTS 25 points

***FINAL GRADE TOTAL ………………………….. 410 points***

All Written tests are to be taken at the Testing Center in the NAS building. Oral tests are scheduled with your instructor 3 times during the semester, outside of class time. They require about 10 minutes each. Tests must be taken within one week of the date listed on the semester plan. Failure to do so will result in the loss of 5 points for every week a test is not completed.

RE-TESTING If you do not pass an oral or written test the first time you take it, you may re-take it one more time. The procedure for re-taking is as follows: 1. Work with a tutor on the test you failed. 2. Obtain a re-test permission slip from your instructor. 3. Go to the testing center, present the slip, and make sure you are given the re-test version of the test you are re-taking. PLEASE NOTE that re-testing is principally designed to help those who fail a test. The maximum grade that can be achieved on a re-test is 79%.

If a student with a grade lower than 79% on the first version of a test would like to raise the grade to a maximum of 79%, the teacher can authorize a re- test.

FINAL GRADE Your final grade will be based on the number of points you have received on the above criteria. However, you must have accumulated 210 points on the tests (equivalent to 70%) before any homework, attendance or participation points are added. Any student who averages 65-69% on tests will receive a “D” grade for the course. Homework, attendance and participation points will not raise the “D” grade.

In this course you may achieve: A 90% - 100% = 369 – 410 points B + 85% - 89% = 348 – 368 points B 80% - 84% = 328 – 347 points C+ 75% - 79% = 307 – 327 points C 70% - 74% = 287 – 306 points D 65% - 69% = 266 – 286 points

5 F less than 65% = 265 points or less

DEPARTMENT POLICIES :

IF YOUR FINAL GRADE IS A “D” YOU WILL PASS THE COURSE BUT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE TO A HIGHER LEVEL IN THIS LANGUAGE. During the last 2 weeks of the semester, one week in summer semesters, testing on Chapter 4 ONLY will be allowed. All other tests, oral and written, MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THIS TIME. If you have NOT completed the course requirements by the end of the semester, but have successfully completed at least the Preliminare and Chapters 1 and 2, you may apply for an “Incomplete.” Your instructor will explain this procedure during the last 2 weeks of the semester.
